Abstract
A stainless steel plate having a hair line and gold plated pattern is produced by (i) the steps of: photomechanically obtaining silk screens having a portion without photoresist and a hardened portion (ii) applying one of the screens to the plate and ink through the plate and then forming a first hair line pattern (8) on an unmasked portion of the plate and then removing the photoresist; forming a second hair line pattern by the same process on a second unmasked portion, and then removing the photoresist; (iii) forming a gold-plated layer (11) on an unmasked portion, using a third screen and ink on the plate and etching the areas to be gold-plated. The gold-plated pattern may subsequently be electrolytically treated to produce a brown or green pattern. <IMAGE>
Description
STAINLESS STEEL PLATE HAVING COLORED AND
TOPOGRAPHICAL SURFACE AND FABRICATING METHOD THEREOF
The present invention relates to a stainless steel plate having a topographical surface and a fabricating method thereof, and more particularly, to a stainless steel plate and a fabricating method thereof wherein hair lines are alternately formed and a gold-plated layer is formed harmoniously to thereby display a topographical (threedimensional) optical effect with their colors.
Presently, various figures and shapes are displayed in the surface of a sheet of stainless steel plate utilized as a decorative design of elevators by means of a technique such as painting, silk screen and etching. Here, etching is the most widely available process.
The etching is performed in the sequence of FIGs. la to ld. First, a black and shift draft film as shown in FIG. la is put on a silk screen 1 having frames 2 consistently coated with a negative photoresist as shown in FIG. ib to be closely attached to each other by a pressure applied thereto. An exposure is executed upon the resultant structure and the draft film is taken away. Then, silk screen 1 is washed to have a portion 3 without the photoresist layer since it is dissolved due to failing to receive light and a portion 4 with the photoresist thereon hardened by receiving the light.
The silk screen prepared as above is put on a sheet of stainless steel plate, and an acid-resistant ink
is coated on the whole surface. After removing the silk screen, an area 5 masked with the ink and an area 6 without being masked with the ink are provided on the stainless steel plate as shown in FIG. Ic.
Successively, the resultant structure is immersed into ferric-chloride to etch area 6 without involving the ink, which is then subjected to drying, delaminating, washing, neutralizing, etc. Therefore, an etched portion 7 of a lackluster surface is formed in the stainless steel plate having a glossy mirror surface as shown in Fig. id.
However, when chemical corrosion is employed to produce onedimensional depth, it is insufficient to es a three-dimensional optical effect of a ridgy plane. In addition, when foreign materials are attached to the corroded portion, removing them is not easy and they deteriorate the effect of design.
Therefore, embodiments of the present invention seek to provide a stainless steel plate having a topographical surface and a fabricating method thereof in which hair line patterns
are formed on first surface portions and second surface portions are
etched according to a pattern to form a gold-plated layer.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface wherein hair lines are formed on the surface of a stainless steel plate (including a glossy portion), and a gold-plated portion is formed on a predetermined portion where the hair lines are not formed.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of fabricating a stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface comprising the steps of: putting a plurality of draft films having different image patterns on silk screens where photoresist is coated, exposing and washing the silk screens, to thereby obtain silk screens having a portion without photoresist and a hardened portion; masking the steel plate using one of the silk screens having a predetermined pattern, forming a first hair line pattern on an unmasked portion, and removing the photoresist; putting another of the silk screens having a predetermined pattern on the stainless steel plate of the second step to mask the first hair line pattern obtained in the second step, forming a second hair line pattern on the unmasked portion, and removing the photoresist; and putting another of the silk screens having a predetermined pattern which can mask the
first and second hair line patterns and a predetermined portion, on the stainless steel plate as in the above mentioned steps, masking
the stainless steel, forming a gold-plated layer on an unmasked portion, and removing the photoresist.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of
example, to the accoenying drawings, in which:

FIG. lc shows a state where a photoresist is masked on a stainless steel plate;
FIG. ld shows a state where the masked photoresist is removed after etching;

FIG. 2a shows a state of a draft film;
FIG. 2b shows a state of a silk screen after exposure and washing;
FIG. 2c shows a state in which masking and first hair line processing are formed on a mirror stainless steel plate;;
FIG. 2d shows a state in which masking and second hair line processing are performed using another silk screen after the first hair line processing;
FIG. 2e shows a state in which hair lines are formed after removing the silk screen; and
FIG. 2f shows a state in which masking and etching are performed; and
FIG. 2f shows a finished product.
Hereinafter, a preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings.
In one embodiment of the present invention, hair lines 8 and 9 are formed alternately on the surface of a stainless steel plate (including a glossy portion), and a gold-plated layer 11 is formed on a portion where the hair lines are not formed.
In the configuration, hair lines 8 and 9 may be alternately formed while overlapped with each other. However, they may be formed alternately or in different directions while not overlapped with each other, obtaining a topographical (threedimensional) effect with optical illusion.
In a portion where the hair lines are not formed, gold plating is performed according to a pattern required. In gold plating, if a portion to be gold-plated is etched in advance, a dim but better optical illusion effect is exhibited with the hair lines, unlike the case where etching is not performed
prior to gold plating.
In addition, when the gold-plated layer is electrolyzed in an electrolyte solution, the original color of gold is changed to show an optical illusion with brown or green. Here,
the retinting or discoloring means is a well-known inco color means,
in which a stainless steel plate is immersed and electrolyzed
in an aqueous solution of CrO3and H2S04
In the manufacturing process of the present invention, gold plating may be performed on the glossy portion of the stainless steel plate. In another way, a portion to be goldplated is etched to become a lackluster portion, on which gold plating is performed. Since this gold plated plane becomes horizontal to other planes and gold plated layer 11 is formed on the lackluster portion, an optical illusion displaying dim colors is expressed, unlike the case where gold plating is performed directly on the glossy portion.
If the gold-plated layer is electrolyzed and changed into brown or green using an electrolyte solution, the original color of gold goes well with brown or green, displaying dim or dazzling optical illusions.
FIGs. 2a-2g show the manufacturing process of one embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, though one kind of image pattern is represented, the present invention is not confined to it but can select a variety of patterns as the case may be.
Referring to FIG. 2a, two sheets of draft films A and B are put on silk screens (which are tightly supported to their frames) on the overall surface of which a photoresist is uniformly coated. Then, the draft films are exposed and then removed. When the silk screens are washed, the silk screens
A', B' and C' having photoresist-free portion 3 and hardened portion 4, respectively, are obtained as shown in FIG. 2b.
Thus prepared silk screens are put sequentially on the stainless steel plate in performing the following process.
First, silk screen A' is put on the stainless steel plate, which is masked by acid-resistant ink.
Thereafter, silk screen A' is removed, and hair line 8 is formed on a unmasked portion from the right top portion to the left bottom using a hair line machine, as shown in FIG. 2c.
Then, the ink is removed.
After the step, on the stainless steel plate, silk screen
B' having another pattern is put and masking is performed in the same method as above. After the silk screen is removed, hair line 9 is formed on the unmasked portion from the left top to the right bottom, as shown in FIG. 2d. Then, when the ink is removed, hair lines 8 and 9 not overlapped but formed alternately are obtained as shown in FIG. 2e.
On the stainless steel plate of FIG. 2e, silk screen C' having another pattern is put and masking is performed in the same manner as above. Then, when silk screen C' is removed and etching is performed on the unmasked portion, an etched portion 10 is formed as shown in FIG. 2f.
When the masking ink is removed, masking is performed using silk screen C' used in the etching process, the silk screen is removed, and then gold plating is carried out on etched portion 10, gold-plated portion 11 is formed only on the unmasked portion, that is, a lackluster portion (etched portion) made by etching.
Subsequently, when ink is removed, a stainless steel plate having hair lines 8 and 9 alternately formed as shown in
FIG. 2g and gold-plated layer 11 is obtained. The stainless steel plate of FIG. 2g where gold-plated layer 11 is formed is electrolyzed in an electrolyte solution of dichromic acid, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid so that the golden color of the gold-plated layer can be varied harmoniously with brown or green. Here, the discoloring is a well-known technique which will be omitted in description.
As described above, hair lines 8 and 9 of the present invention are not simply drawn lines, but function to absorb light, displaying a dim optical illusion going well with the glossy portion of the stainless steel plate.
Further, the hair lines are alternately formed while not overlapped with each other, and the gold-plated portion is formed between the hair lines or other portions of etched lackluster portions, displaying another optical illusion.
Claims (9)
1. A stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface wherein hair lines are formed on the surface of a stainless steel plate (including a glossy portion), and a gold-plated portion is formed on a predetermined portion where said hair lines are not formed.
2. A stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface as claimed in claim 1, wherein said hair lines are formed alternately while not overlapped with each other.
3. A stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface as claimed in claim 1, wherein said gold-plated layer is formed on an etched portion where said hair lines are not formed.
4. A stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface as claimed in claim 1 or claim 3,
wherein said gold-plated layer is formed and retinted to
match brown or green.
5. A method of fabricating a stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface comprising the steps of:
(a) putting a plurality of draft films having different image patterns on silk screens where photoresist is coated,
exposing and washing the silk screens, to thereby obtain silk screens having a portion without photoresist and a hardened portion;
(b) masking the steel plate using one of the silk screens having a predetermined pattern, forming a first hair line pattern on an unmasked portion, and removing the photoresist;
(c) putting another of the silk screens having a predetermined pattern on the stainless steel plate of step (b) to mask the first hair line pattern obtained in step (b), forming a second hair line pattern on the unmasked portion, and removing the photoresist; and
(d) putting another of the silk screens having a predetermined pattern which can mask the first and second hair line patterns and a predetermined portion, on the stainless steel plate as in the above mentioned steps, masking the stainless steel, forming a gold-plated layer on an unmasked portion, and removing the photoresist.
6. A method of fabricating a stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface as claimed in claim 5, wherein said stainless steel plate is masked by one of said silk screens and an unmasked portion is etched prior to the
formation of the gold-plated layer.
7. A method of fabricating a stainless steel plate having a colored and topographical surface as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6, wherein said gold-plated layer is electrolyzed to match brown or green.
8. A stainless steel plate as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to or as shown in the accolTIpanying drawings.
9. A method of fabricating a stainless steel plate according to claim 5,
substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to or as shown in the accompanying drawings.
