Abstract

In a water trap, acidic boiler condensate enters through port 1, and when the condensate is at a critical level above weir 3 the stepped-diameter, angled-end syphon 4 automatically starts to discharge water through outlet 5. With outlet 5 blocked, the level rises to block pressure-sensing point 6 to restrict boiler operation, and if this fails bypass 7 drains water. Access points 9 enable cleaning. The trap releases condensate in accumulated quantities to reduce possibility of the outflow freezing. <IMAGE>

Description

CONDENSATE MANAGING DEVICE This invention relates to a device to manage condensate.
High efficiency Condensing Boilers produce a residue liquid known a condensate. It is generally accepted that this acidic water should be released to a drain in accumulated quantities to reduce the possibilities of the out flow freezing. It is also accepted that the boiler producing the condensate should be prevented from firing in the event of a blocked drain.
According to the present invention the device incorporates the following functions:1. The collection and then depositing the condensate periodically into a drain controlled by the use of a stepped diameter syphon tube with an angled inlet.
2. The automatic inhibiting of the boiler by operating a pressure switch within the boiler in the event of a blocked condensate drain, or the failure of the syphon.
3. The automatic bypass of the condensate syphon in the event of a malfunction of the syphon and the pressure switch.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1. shows in perspective the condensate trap body incorporating the device.
Referring to to the drawing fig 1. the condensate from the boiler enters at port 1. and first fills the the reservoir 2.
to the level of weir 3. forming- a 25mm permanent isolation trap. The condensate will continue to fill the reservoir 2 until it reaches a critical level -when the stepped diameter syphon with an angled entry 4. will start to automatically discharge a predetermined volume of condensate through outlet 5.
In the case of a blocked outlet 5. or the syphon failing to operate, reservoir 2 will continue to fill to a level where the pressure differential sensing point 6. will become sealed.
Sensing point 6 is coupled to the internal pressure switch incorporated in the boiler. When sensing point 6 becomes sealed the pressure switch together with its electronic control will prevent the normal cycling of the boiler.
Should the syphon fail to operate and the pressure switch fail to inhibit the boiler then bypass 7. will come into operation.
Orifice 8 is to ensures that the reservoir is maintained-at atmospheric pressure.
Access points 9 are for cleaning purposes.

Claims (5)

1. This condensate managing device contains a number of feature which combine to form an effective and safe way of disposing of condensate and at the same time is compatible with existing boiler technology.
2. The syphon Fig. 1-4 with its stepped diameter tube and angled entry is automatically self starting and will flush a given volume of condensate down the outlet Fig.1-5.
3. If the syphon Fig.l- 4 fails to operate the level of the condensate will rise and seal the sensor point Fig.1-6. When this sensor point is sealed the boilers internal pressure switch and associated electronic will inhibit the operation of the boiler.
4. A safety bypass tube ig.l-7 will allow the condensate to drain away should both the syphon and the pressure sensing mechanism fail.
5. Orifice Fig.l-8 ensures that the reservoir is maintained at atmospheric pressure.
