Abstract
A web locking mechanism comprises a housing containing a clamping roller (30) and stepped surfaces (28) on the housing. A web (20A) of an adult seat belt can be clamped between the roller (30) and the surfaces (28), and released by manual operation of levers (34) against a load exerted by springs (38). The locking mechanism can be used to secure a child's safety seat in position within a vehicle by means of an adult seat belt. <IMAGE>
Description
Web Lockina Mechanism
The present invention relates to a web locking mechanism, in particular a web locking mechanism for use with a childs safety seat.
Childrens safety seats for use in vehicles are commonly secured in position within the vehicle by means of the adult seat belt.
It is necessary to secure a part of the webbing of the adult seat belt to the safety seat in order to stabilise the childs seat and to keep the adults seat belt in a fixed position over the childs seat.
The present invention seeks to provide a web locking mechanism and a childs safety seat incorporating a web locking mechanism in which the adult seat belt can be readily located within the locking mechanism and the locking mechanism is readily operable to clamp or release the adults seat belt.
Accordingly the present invention provides a web locking mechanism for use with a childs safety seat comprising a housing and a moveable clamping element mounted in the housing, the housing having an opening arranged to receive a web of an adult seat belt, the web being located between the clamping element and one or more surfaces of the housing, the clamping element being manually movable to release the web from the clamping element and the said surface or surfaces to allow the web to move freely with respect to the housing or to clamp the web between the clamping element and the surface or surfaces.
The housing can be generally C-shaped in cross section having a base portion, two upstanding side portions and two upper portions extending laterally from the two side portions towards each other and defining the opening for the web.
The under surfaces of the upper portions can be provided with discontinuities.
The discontinuities can be in the form of steps.
The under surfaces of the upper portions can be generally parallel to the inner surface or surfaces of the base portion.
The clamping element can comprise a roller having a roughened surface.
The roughened surface can be in the form of teeth like formations.
The roller can be mounted in a frame which has bearing surfaces for the roller and the frame is mounted in the housing.
The frame can be mounted for pivotal movement in the housing.
The frame can have one or more levers allowing the frame to be moved relative to the housing.
A lever can be provided at each end of the frame.
Biassing means can be provided to urge the frame into a position in which the web is clamped.
The biassing means can comprise a pair of coil springs one being located at each end of the frame and mounted in the housing.
The invention further provides a childs safety seat incorporating a web clamping mechanism according to the present invention.
A childs safety seat can include a web clamping mechanism on either side of the seat thereby allowing the safety seat to be used on either side of a vehicle.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a childs safety seat incorporating one form of web locking mechanism according to the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a view on arrow A in figure 1 but omitting a seat portion of the safety seat;
Figure 3 shows a perspective view to an enlarged scale of the web clamping mechanism shown in figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 shows a partially sectioned view of the web locking mechanism shown in figure 3;
Figure 5 shows a further partially sectioned view of the web clamping mechanism shown in figure 3; and
Figures 6 and 7 show a section through the web locking mechanism of figure 3 with the locking mechanism in the operative position and in the release position respectively.
Referring to figures 1 and 2 there is shown a childs safety seat (10) comprising a base member (12) and a seat member (14). The base member has a back portion (12A) on which are mounted two web locking mechanisms (16). The seat (10) is held in position on a vehicle seat (18) by means of an adult seat belt (20), the diagonal portion (20A) of which is located within the web locking mechanism (16). As will be seen particularly in figure 2 the diagonal portion (20A) of the adult seat belt passes through an opening (22) in the back (12A) of the seat portion (12) and a locking tongue (20B) of the adult seat belt is engaged with the buckle (20C) on a short end anchorage which is secured to the vehicle chassis. The lap portion (20D) of the adult seat belt runs back through the opening (22) and is secured to the vehicle chassis.
Referring to figure 3 each web locking mechanism (16) comprises a housing (24) having a base portion (24A), two upstanding side portions (24B) and two laterally extending upper portions (24C) which extend towards one another and define an opening (26). As will be particularly seen in figure 6 and 7 the under surfaces of the upper portions (24C) are provided with discontinuities in the form of steps (28). The inner surfaces of the base portion (24A) are generally planar and the under surfaces of the upper portions (24C) are generally parallel to the inner surfaces of the base portion.
A clamping element in the form of a roller (30) is mounted in a frame (32) which is secured in the housing. The roller is formed with a roughened surface in this case in the form of teeth but has plane ends (30A) which locate in bearing surfaces (32A) on the frame.
At each end of the frame (32) is a lever (34) attached to the frame (32) by stub shafts (36). The frame (32) is arranged to pivot around the shafts (36).
Springs (38) are provided to bias the frame so that the roller engages the web (20A).
Fixing screws (40) are provided to secure the housing (24) on to the back (12A) of the base member (12).
Referring particularly to figures 2, 3, 6 and 7 in order to secure the seat (10) in position in a vehicle the locking tongue (2OB) is passed through the opening (22) and is locked to the buckle (20C) on the short end anchorage. The lap portion (20D) of the adult seat extends over a shelf (22A) which defines part of the opening (22), and the diagonal web (20A) extends through the opening (22) from a retractor (not shown) and partially overlaps the lap portion (20D). The base member (12) is thus held onto the seat (18) but it is now necessary to secure the web (20A) to the seat member (12) using the locking mechanism (16).
The diagonal web (2OA) can be loaded into the web locking mechanism (16) by pinching the edges of the web (20A) together and inserting the web into the opening (26) of the locking mechanism and manually depressing the levers (34) against the spring load so that the roller (30) is moved away from the stepped surfaces (28). The web can then be located between the roller (30) and the under surfaces (28) of the upper portions (24C) as shown in figure 7, and can move freely in either direction.
In order to lock the web (20A) to the base member (12), the levers (34) are held depressed so that the web can be tensioned forcing the seat member into contact with the seat (18). The lever or levers are released and the springs urge the roller (30) to clamp the web (20A) against the stepped surfaces (28) in order to maintain the web tension. The biassing springs (38) will tend to maintain the roller (30) in the position shown in figure 6.
Any load applied to the web (20A) in the direction of arrow B in figure 6 will tend to increase the clamping load on the web as the roller (30) will be drawn towards the stepped surface (28).
In order to release the web (20A) the levers (34) are depressed so that the roller (30) adopts the position shown in figure 7 and the web (20A) can the move freely in either direction within the clamping mechanism, whilst the lever or levers are kept depressed. The webs (20A) can be removed from the locking mechanism through the opening (26) and the tongue (20B) released from the buckle (20C) allowing the safety seat to be removed from the vehicl.
It will be appreciated that a locking mechanism according to the present invention provides a means whereby an adult seat belt can be rapidly loaded into the locking mechanism and the web can be easily released by manual operation of one or both of the levers (34).
A locking mechanism is provided on both sides of the safety seat so that seat can be used on either side of a vehicle.
Claims (17)
1. A web locking mechanism for use with a childs safety seat
comprising a housing and a movable clamping element mounted
in the housing, the housing having an opening arranged to
receive a web of an adult seat belt, the web being located
between the clamping element and one or more surfaces of
the housing, the clamping element being manually moveable
to release the web from the clamping element and the said
surface or surfaces to allow the web to move freely with
respect of the housing or to clamp the web between the
clamping element and the surface or surfaces.
2. A mechanism as claimed in claim 1 in which the housing is
generally C-shaped in cross section having a base portion,
two upstanding side portions and two upper portions
extending from the two side portions towards each other and
defining the opening for the web.
3. A mechanism as claimed in claim 2 in which the under
surface of the upper sections are provided with
discontinuities.
4. A mechanism as claimed in claim 3 in which the
discontinuities are in the form of steps.
5. A mechanism as claimed in any one of claims 2, 3 or 4 in
which the under surfaces of the upper sections are
generally parallel to the inner surface or surfaces of the
base portion.
6. A mechanism as claimed in any one of the preceding claims
in which the clamping element comprises a roller having a
roughened surface.
7. A mechanism as claimed in claim 6 in which the roller is
provided with teeth like formations.
8. A mechanism as claimed in claim 6 or claim 7 in which the
roller is mounted in a frame, the frame having bearing
surfaces for the roller.
9. A mechanism as claimed in claim 8 in which at least one
lever is attached to the frame allowing the frame to be
moved relative to the housing.
10. A mechanism as claimed in claim 9 in which a lever is
provided at each end of the frame.
11. A mechanism as claimed in calim 9 or claim 10 in which the
frame can pivot on shafts between the bearing surfaces and
the lever or levers.
12. A mechanism as claimed in any one of claims 8, 9, 10 or 11
in which biassing means are provided to urge the frame into
a position in which the web is clamped.
13. A mechanism as claimed in claim 12 in which the biassing
means comprises a pair of coil springs one being located at
each end of the frame and mounted in the housing.
14. A mechanism constructed and arranged for use and operation
substantially as herein described and with reference to the
accompanying drawings.
15. A childs safety seat including a web locking mechanism as
claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
16. A childs safety seat as claimed in claim 15 in which a web
clamping mechanism is provided on both sides of the seat.
17. A childs safety seat constructed and arranged for use and
operation substantially as herein described and with
reference to the accompanying drawings.
