Abstract
An external door mirror assembly 10 for a motor vehicle and which has a mirror 11 split into two mirror planes 11A and 11B. The outer plane 11B (with respect to the vehicle) is inclined to the inner plane to form a "convex" reflection surface. <IMAGE>
Description
A Driving Mirror
This invention relates to external driving mirrors for vehicles in particular cars.
A driving mirror may be mounted on a door or door part external of the vehicle to allow the driver to see what other vehicles1 persons, or objects are alongside the vehicle. However, most vehicles have a blind spot so that if an overtaking vehicle is present in the blind spot when the driver looks at the mirror its presence will not be apparent.
This in effect means that when driving on motorway, to be sure of not obstructing on overtaking vehicle, a driver who is about to pull out into an off-side lane may have to either quickly glance over his shoulder, or vary his line of sight into the external mirror in an attempt to view the blind spot.
These attempts to view the blind spot are dangerous in that the driver's attention is temporarily removed from the traffic in front, and become a nuisence over a long motorway journey.
The present invention provides a driving mirror which overcomes the above problems.
The invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig 1 is an elevation of a door mounted driving
mirror assembly for a car.
Fig 2 is a section through the mirror on the line Il-Il of Fig 1.
and Fig 3 is a section through a second mirror also
according to the invention.
With reference to Figs 1 - 2 there is illustrated a door mounted driving mirror assembly 10 having a mirror 11 mounted in a support 12 which in use is mounted on a vehicle door or door part by a mounting bracket 13.
The mirror 11 comprises a first planar surface llA arranged in use adjacent the vehicle and a second outer surface portion llB arranged at angle to the first planar surface so that the total reflecting surface of the mirror 11 is of a convex nature.
Preferably the outer surface portion llB is in the form of a second planar surface which is arranged at an angle t to the first planar surface. The two intersecting planes IlA & liB intersect along a line 16 which extends transversely of the mirror.
When using two planar surfaces 11A, llB, it has been determined that they must intersect at between 13-15 degrees and preferably at 14 degrees to cover the blind spot.
Fig 3 shows a second embodiment of the invention in which the two planar surfaces llA and llB are interconnected, at least on their reflective surface by a curved surface 26 giving a smooth transition from the first surface to the outer second surface.
Claims (5)
1. An external mirror for a vehicle having a mirror surface comprising a first plane in use adjacent the
,st vehicle, and a second outer portion at an angle to first plane to form a 'convex' reflection surface.
2. A mirror as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the second outer portion is formed as a second plane and the second plane intersects the first plane at an angle of substantially 140.
3. A mirror as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the two planes intersect along a line which extends transversely of the mirror.
4. A mirror as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the first and second planes intersect by way of a curved surface.
5. An external driving mirror substantially as described herein and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
