Abstract

A garment hanging apparatus for use by disabled persons comprises a support frame (3) and pivot means (9, 10) pivotally connecting the support frame (3) to a supporting structure. The support frame (3) comprises a hanging rail (2) at a location spaced radially from a pivotal axis and motor means (15) operable to effect pivotal movement of the support frame (3) between a lowered position (13) in which the hanging rail (2) is accessible for the attachment of garments to the hanging rail or removal therefrom and a raised position (12) in which the hanging rail (2) is raised to a level from which, in use, garments are hung in storage. <IMAGE>

Description

GARMENT HANGING APPARATUS This invention relates to garment hanging apparatus for use in particular but not exclusively by disabled persons.
Fixed garment hanging apparatus such as wardrobe hanging rails are known. A disadvantage of such apparatus is that in order to allow the garments to hang freely it is necessary for the hanging rail to be located at a height which is inaccessible to persons with limited reach such as persons confined to a wheelchair. Thus it may be impossible for such persons to attach or remove garments from the hanging rail without assistance.
According to the present invention there is disclosed garment hanging apparatus for use by disabled persons comprising a support frame, pivot means pivotally connecting the support frame to a supporting structure, the support frame comprising a hanging rail at a location spaced radially from a pivotal axis defined by the pivot means, and moving means operable to effect pivotal movement of the support frame between a lowered position in which the hanging rail is accessible for the attachment of garments to the hanging rail or removal therefrom and a raised position in which the hanging rail is raised to a level from which in use garments are hung in storage.
An advantage of such apparatus is that disabled persons can easily attach and remove garments on the hanging rail whilst enabling the garments to hang freely when stored.
Preferably the lowered position of the hanging rail is spaced from the supporting structure to a greater extent in the horizontal direction than the raised position.
The hanging rail is thereby held clear of the supporting structure in the lowered position to further assist a disabled person in gaining access to the hanging rail.
Preferably the moving means comprises a roller rotatably mounted on the supporting structure, at least one flexible member which is substantially inextensible and wound onto the roller, each flexible member having a free end connected to the support frame and a motor being operable to rotate the roller between first and second limits of angular displacement corresponding to the raised and lowered positions of the hanging rail respectively.
Advantageously the motor is a tubular motor comprising a stator connected to the supporting structure and a tubular rotor mounted coaxially on the stator and constituting the roller.
An advantage of this arrangement is that it provides a compact and unobtrusive moving means which can be readily fitted to a supporting structure such as a wardrobe or cupboard.
Conveniently the moving means comprises first and second flexible members which are wound on to the roller at spaced apart locations and are connected to respective first and second end portions of the hanging rail.
The hanging rail is thereby supported at each end portion in order to provide safety and stability when fully loaded.
The flexible members are preferably lengths of nylon webbing.
In a preferred embodiment the support frame comprises a horizontal member extending coaxially with the pivotal axis and connected in parallel spaced apart relationship to the hanging rail by first and second arms such that the configuration of the support frame is rectangular.
The pivot means may comprise first and second pivots connected to the supporting structure at locations beneath and substantially in vertical alignment with the roller and the pivots may be pivotally connected to respective opposite ends of the horizontal member.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus; and Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1 with raised, lowered and intermediate positions of the hanging rail indicated.
Figure 1 shows a garment hanging apparatus 1 including a hanging rail 2 which is part of a rectangular metal frame 3. Frame 3 includes a horizontal member 4 which is maintained in parallel spaced relationship relative to the hanging rail 2 by first and second connecting arms 5 and 6 respectively.
The horizontal member 4 has first and second end portions 7 and 8 which are connected to respective pivots 9 and 10 attached to a supporting structure 11 in the form of a wardrobe. The horizontal member 4 is pivoted so as to be rotatable about its longitudinal axis thereby enabling the frame 3 to pivot between a raised position shown at 12 in Figure 2 and a lowered position shown at 13 in Figure 2. In Figure 1 the frame 3 is shown at an intermediate position indicated at 14 in Figure 2.
A tubular motor 15 is also connected to the supporting structure at a location vertically above and parallel to the horizontal member 4. The tubular motor 15 is of a type commonly used for raising and lowering shutters or blinds and has a stator 16 upon which a tubular rotor 17 is rotatably mounted so as to constitute a roller. The tubular motor 15 is provided with adjustable presets enabling the roller 17 to be driven between predetermined limits of angular displacement.
First and second flexible members 18 and 19 respectively comprising lengths of nylon webbing are connected to first and second end portions 20 and 21 respectively of the hanging rail 2, the flexible members being also wound on to the roller 17 such that by angular displacement of the roller the hanging rail 2 can be moved towards or away from the tubular motor 15.
A control switch 22 is also mounted on the supporting structure 11 and is connected to the tubular motor 15.
In use the hanging rail is normally stowed in the raised position 12 and garments are attached to the hanging rail by means of coat hangers 23. For a disabled person in a wheelchair to gain access to the hanging rail, the person operates the control switch 22 to actuate the motor 15 so as to rotate the roller 17 in a direction which will unwind the flexible members 18 and 19. The hanging rail 2 is lowered into the lowered position 13 by pivotal motion of the frame 3 about a pivotal axis defined by the pivots 9 and 10. In the lowered position 13 the connecting arms 5 and 6 project horizontally from the supporting structure and the tubular motor stops automatically when this position is reached. The person then removes or attaches garments to the hanging rail and actuates the control switch 22 to raise the hanging rail to its raised position 12 by appropriate rotation of the motor 15.
As seen in Figure 2 the hanging rail 2 is readily accessible in the lowered position since the connecting arms 5 and 6 project horizontally away from the supporting structure 11.
