'2-3 03?)o PRESSING DEVICE FOR SAND MOULDS The invention relates to a
pressing head anda device for sand moulds, and to a method for compressing sand around a pattern in a substantially uniform manner.
Rigid pressing plates in simple mould machines are known but for the most part they achieve unsatisfactory results because overcompression occurs in the region of high pattern parts whilst in the other zones there is insufficient pressing force.' So-called multi-stamp presses are also known which comprise a plurality of adjacently disposed hydraulic cylinders whose downwardly travelling piston rods have pressure feet which between them cover the entire mould surface. The rods descend to different depths according to the local height of the pattern.
This apparatus is very expensive and extremely liable to wear; also since it uses a plurality of rigid pressing plates which, for structural reasons, cannot exceed a certain size, uniform sealing can not be guaranteed, especially in the edge regions. It is the aim of the present invention to remove the above-mentioned disadvantages. 25 This aim is achieved by providing, in the pressing head, a highly elastic plate of a substantially incompressible material with a hardness of <40 Shore A. The modulus of elasticity of the material should be less than about 500 kPa(kplcm2). A preferred embodiment is described in detail with reference to Fig. 1, which shows a pressing device in accordance with the invention. Above a pattern device 1, set on a base with a casting box 2 and sand frame 3 disposed thereon, there is arranged a generally rigid pressing head or support plate,5 which can be moved vertically by a hydraulic cylinder 4. Secured to the pressing head 5 is a thick plate of highly elastic incompressible material 6 whose Young's modulus is less than about 500 kPa. 5 If the pressing head 5 is now pressed by the cylinder 4 on to the moulding sand 7 then the elastic plate 6 adapts to the differing compressibility of the sand, caused by the varying contour of the pattern 1, to such an extent that on each cm2 of the sand surface, except for the edge strip 9, an approximately uniform specific applied pressure is produced.
Since the plate 6 consists of substantially incompressible material (e.g. rubber, silicone etc.) it is "dented" in the region of high pattern parts and "bulges" in shallow pattern regions.
As shown in the Figure, air pockets 10 are contained in the material 6, but these are optional. In particular for compressing extremely high patterns it is desirable to include such pockets at least in the region of the high points, ensuring an enhanced local compressibility.
In a further common embodiment it is not the pressing head 5 which is pressed by a cylinder 4 on to the sand 7, but casting box 2, pattern device 1, sand frame 3 and sand 7 are pressed by pressing cylinders, located underneath, against a pressing plate fixedly arranged above.
Claims (8)
1. Pressing head for a pressing device for sand moulds, including an elastic plate of a substantially incompressible material with.a hardness of <40 Shore A, for producing a substantially uniform applied pressure.
2. Pressing head according to claim 1, in which air chambers are provided in the elastic plate.
3. Pressing head according to claim 1, or 2, further including surrounding edge strips for lateral 10 support of the elastic plate.
4. Pressing head according to claim 3, in which the edge strips press nonelastically in the edge region not to be occupied by a pattern.
5. Pressing head according to any preceding claim, in which the elastic plate has a Young's Modulus of less than about 500 kPa. -
6. Pressing head as claimed in any preceding claim and including a support plate to which the elastic plate is secured.
7. A pressing device including a base, a pressing head as claimed in any preceding claim and a means for urging the head and base together so that the elastic plate accommodates itself to the shape of a pattern.
8. A method of compressing a sand mould around a pattern, comprising the steps of: providing a pressing head including an elastic, substantially incompressible plate facing the sand, and applying a force to the plate so as to compress the sand and cause the elastic plate to adapt to any variations in height of the pattern.
