Framework. - Aircraft spars or ribs, comprising booms and webs formed of separate metal strips, have those booms which are in compression made of thicker material or of a stiffer shape than those parts that are in tension ; or both means may be employed together. Alternatively the same gauge material may be used throughout and those parts that are in compression may be strengthened by additional strips of the same shape so as to form double-thickness booms, or strips c, g, or i, Figs. 6, 12 or 14, may be employed. Cylindrical booms may be reinforced by sliding on to them tubes of slightly greater diameter. Specifications 131,969 and 195,825 are referred to.
