Abstract
The invention provides a glazing seal comprising an elongate sealing body of resilient foamed synthetic resin material 15 of substantially uniform cross section encased in a thin, flexible membrane 17, the seal being, in cross section, shaped to provide inter-connected enlarged sealing 55, 19 and anchoring 53, 21 lobes. The seal is of use in glazed window or door assemblies, and is particularly advantageously used in assemblies where a similar type of seal is used as a sash seal. The seal is relatively easy to use, being flexible and resilient. The invention also provides a glazing pane support member in combination with the seal, and a glazed window or door assembly incorporating the seal. <IMAGE>
Description
SEALING ARRANGEMENT
This invention relates to sealing arrangements and, in particular, to glazing seals for use in providing seals between window glass or window panes and the support frames therefor.
It is known to use a particular type of material in a vent or door-sealing application. For instance, this particular material is known for use to provide seals between a window sash and the outer frame. However, in such cases, the sort of seals used as sash seals, to provide sealing between the sash and the glass panes, have typically been in the form of EPDM or neoprene gaskets, for instance, fir tree or wedge-shaped sealing devices.
The above-referred to sealing material known for use in vent or door-sealing applications is in the form of an elongated strip of resilient foamed synthetic resin material encased in a thin flexible membrane. An example of such a material is that provided under the trade mark Q-LON by Schlegel Corporation. The
Q-LON material is shaped, in cross section, to provide interconnected enlarged sealing and anchoring portions. It is regarded as particularly suitable for providing sealing between a fixed frame and a relatively movable window or door arrangement because of its easy compressibility, resilience and its excellent memory, the material returning to its original shape after each compression.
It has now been appreciated that such sealing material may also serve to provide sealing between the glass or other material serving as the window pane and the sash which supports a pane, even though these elements are not, in use, relatively movable.
According to the present invention, there is provided, for use as a glazing seal, an elongate sealing body of resilient foamed synthetic resin material of substantially uniform cross section encased in a thin, flexible membrane, said seal being, in cross section, shaped to provide inter-connected enlarged sealing and anchoring lobes.
It is particularly advantageous to use this material in a window installation as both glazing seals and one or more sash seals.
By so doing, only one type of sealing material is used, whereas previously at least two different seals have been used. This consolidation of materials is important for both the manufacturers and the installers of the window systems. There is only one removable material for use in the repair of both sash seals and glazing seals.
The seal for use in the present invention is effective when used in the glazing position against one side of a window pane or, in the case of a multiple glazed assembly, against one side of the assembly, sealing pressure being provided against the other side of the pane, or the other side of the assembly, by an integral bead seal or a separately inserted gasket anchored in the bead.
The material used in the present invention is easy to use and works well in sealing around the corners of the window panes.
With the known sash seals, it is necessary to slit the seal to enable it to go around corners. However, the seal of use in the present invention is sufficiently flexible and resilient to accommodate even the sharpest of corners.
The currently used sash seals suffer from shrink-back problems which increase with age. The material used in the present invention has sufficient long-term flexibility and resilience for such problems not to present themselves over at least the normal lifetime of the window assembly.
Preferably, the sealing lobe of the material of use in the present invention is of larger cross section than the anchoring lobe.
Preferably, the window assembly is a multiple-glazing assembly, for instance a double glazing assembly.
An example of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a cross section through part of a double glazing assembly.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, a double-glazing assembly includes outer frame 1 which, in use, is secured in position within a window opening in a building. Outer frame 1 is made of plastics material and is of generally L-shaped cross section having large horizontal limb 3 providing a front edge portion 5 and a relatively smaller vertical limb 7 also provided with a front edge portion 9. Front edge portion 9 of vertical limb 7 of outer frame 1 is provided with a recess 11 which is loaded with a
Q-LON seal having an elongated sealing body 15 of resilient foamed synthetic resin material having substantially uniform cross section and encased in a thin flexible membrane 17. This seal is, when not compressed, shaped to provide inter-connected elongated sealing and anchoring lobes 19 and 21 respectively.
When compressed, as in the accompanying drawing, the sealing lobe is flattened but when uncompressed it assumes a more rounded or triangular shape.
The window assembly also includes a sash 23 also formed out of plastics material and having a generally stepped cross section formed from vertically extending portions 25 and 27 interconnected by horizontal integral portion 29. Downwardly extending vertical portion 25 is provided, at its rear vertical edge, with a recess 29 which is loaded with a further strip of Q LON seal and which is shown in the drawing with its sealing lobe 31 compressed against front edge 5 of outer frame 1.
The central horizontally extending portion 29 of sash 23 is provided, near its front upper edge, with a recess 35 within which is located a retention leg 37 of bead 39 which has an integral hollow body portion 41, the rear external face of which is provided with integral co-extruded ribs 45 which engage with one pane 47 of a pair of double glazing panes 49.
Upstanding, vertical portion 27 of sash 23 is provided with recess 51 in its front edge, this recess accommodating the anchoring lobe 53 of a further strip of Q-LON material. The sealing lobe 55 of this strip bears against the other pane 51 of the double glazing pair 49. This pair of panes 49 is sandwiched between the Q-LON strip and the co-extruded rib 45 on bead 39.
Accordingly, the above described double glazing arrangement is provided with sealing strips of the same type for use both as sash seals and glazing seals. The discovery that the Q-LON material may serve as an effective sash seal means that the number of materials required for use in such a window assembly is reduced and the procedure for installation of the assembly, and for repairs thereto, is considerably simplified and the associated expense is reduced.
