Abstract
A stem (12) coupled with a hexagonal head (11) has a cross section conforming to the shape of the head and sides parallel to the corresponding sides of the head. At least one retractable projection (15) is provided at one side of the head, whereby the accessory can be releasably secured in a socket (30). During turning of a bolt (20), the stem (12) engages a complementary recess (22) in the bolt head and the socket (30) engages the outer periphery of the bolt head. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Accessory of a wrench
This invention relates to an accessory of a wrench by which the socket can efficiently transmit a torque to a screw for turning.
The conventional bolt typically has a head of flat face and multi-sided edges, generally six sided edges. When turning such bolt by a socket wrench, the socket is sleeved onto the bolt with its six-sided inner walls being in contact with the sides of the bolt head to transmit the applied torque to the bolt. As there are only six engaging sides at most between the socket and bolt head, it is, sometimes, not sufficient to grip the bolt for turning, thus causing the slipping of the bolt as well as the spoilage to the bolt head. Additionally, the hexagonal head wrench generally has an
L-shaped lever of certain length whereby the arm of the force for turning is usually limited. It is not ideal to turn the conventional bolt with such socket wrench where greater torque is necessary to put on or take off the bolt.It is desirable to obtain an accessory to be corporated with a socket to turn a bolt.
It is an object of the invention to provide an accessory to be corporated into a socket to jointly engage with the bolt that should be turned so that the torque can be efficiently transmitted.
According to the present invention, an accessory of a wrench comprises, a polygonal head with predetermined thickness, a stem portion coaxially coupled with the polygonal head and having a cross section conforming to the shape of the head, the sides of the stem portion being parallel to the corresponding sides of the head, and at least one retractable projection provided at one side of the head, whereby the accessory can be fitly inserted in a socket and engagedly secured therein to cooperatively turn a bolt.
Advantageously, the accessory is constructed in such a manner that it has a hexagonal head and a stem portion of hexagonal cross section.
This and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be more apparent in the following description of the preferred embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an accessory constructed according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section view illustrating the engagement of a bolt with a socket according to the invention; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating that the accessory constructed according to invention is used in conjunction with an open end wrench.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the accessory of a wrench according to the invention comprises, a hexagonal head 11 with a predetermined thickness and a stem portion 1 2 of hexagonal cross-section coaxially coupled with the head 11, the sides of the stem portion 12 being parallel to the corresponding sides of the head 11. Two ball shaped members 1 5 are respectively provided in two recesses 13 which are arranged in the two opposite sides 111 and 112 of the head 12 and are loaded with two spring members 14 so that the two ball shaped members 1 5 can be retractably projected from the sides of the head 11.
Referring again to Fig. 2, when the accessory 10 is in use, it is put into a socket 30 with the head 11 being fit therein and the retractably projected ball shaped members 1 5 being engaged the inner wall of the socket 30 by ball and socket engagements and is thereby secured in the socket 30. In the operation, the socket 30 is sleeved into the head 21 of a bolt which is to be turned and the stem portion 1 2 of the accessory 10 is fitly inserted in the hexagonal recess 22 which is provided in a hexagonal head 21 of a bolt 20 (the construction of such bolt 20 is disclosed in my another patent application). The dimensions of the accessory 10 are chosen such that the head portion 11 and the stem portion 12 can be respectively fitted in the socket 30 and the recess 22 of the bolt 20, and therefore the socket 30 will be in twelve points of engagement with the bolt 20 to transmit the torque so as to turn the bolt 20.
Referring to Fig. 3, there is shown another example of application of the accessory 10. The bolt 40 to be turned has a round head 42 which is provided with a recess 41 and the wrench 50 is an open end wrench type. In the operation, the stem portion 12 of the accessory 10 is inserted in the recess 41 and the head portion 11 is tightly gripped by the open end wrench 50. It is appreciated the accessory 10 can be fitted in the recess of a bolt which has a specification corresponding to the specification of the accessory. By means of the accessory 10 the bolt 40 can be turned by an open end wrench 50 for tightening and loosening.
Referring again to Fig. 1 , there is a hexagonal recess 1 6 provided in the head 11, the side walls of the recess 1 6 being arranged parallel with the sides of the head 11. In case of turning a bolt 40 of Fig. 3, the accessory 10 can be turned by a socket which cooperates with another accessory 10 of suitable dimension in a simitar way as shown in Fig. 2, instead of an open end wrench.
With the invention thus explained, it is apparent that obvious modification and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. It is therefore intended that the invention be limited only as indicated in the appended claims.
