Description

SPECIFICATION Headboard This invention relates to a headboard for a bed.
The commonest type of headboard currently on the market comprises a fabric cover stapled onto the front of a board with padding therebetween.
Shanked buttons aiso extend through the cover, the padding and the board, the heads of the buttons lying at the front of the cover and enhancing the appearance thereof. The cover of this type of headboard is not removable for washing or cleaning.
An object of the present invention, is to provide a headboard having a cover which is readily removable for washing or cleaning.
Pursuant hereto the present invention provides a headboard for a bed comprising a cover which is formed to enclose a cover of foam or similar material and is closed along one edge by a sliding clasp fastener, a pocket being provided on the rear surface of the cover to receive one end of a chipboard or plywood base.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a practical embodiment of the headboard of the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross-section, to an enlarged scale, along the line Il-Il of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an eniarged cross-sectionai detail illustrating one of the buttons extending through the cover.
The illustrated embodiment of the headboard of the invention comprises a substantially rectangular cover 10 formed of two superimposed pieces of fabric 11, 12 stitched together around three edges. The piece of fabric 11 providing the front face of the cover 10 may, for example, be patterned or of speciai fabric such as velvet satin, or silk or similar synthetic material while the other piece of fabric 12 is thinner, less expensive and need not have aesthetic appeal. A rectangular foam core 13 is located inside the cover 10 to completely fill same and the fourth, in this case the lower edge of the cover is closed by a sliding clamp fastener 1 4. A decorative ruffle 1 5 of the same material as the front of the cover is sewn in around the side and upper edges of the cover 10.
The fabric 12 at the back of the cover 10 is provided with a pocket 1 6 of similar material sewn thereto. This pocket 1 6 extends across the full width of the cover 1 0 and is sewn thereto parallel to and at a short spacing from the top edge and along each vertical edge. The pocket 1 6 is designed to receive the upper portion of a rectangular chipboard or plywood base 1 7 substantially corresponding in size to the cover 10. The chipboard or plywood base 1 7 is provided with legs 18 formed in known manner for mounting on a bed (not shown). As shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the upper regions of the legs 1 8 which overlap the base 1 7 and are fixed thereto also project into the pocket 1 6.
The cover 10 is provided with a number, e.g. six or eight, of shanked buttons 1 9 arranged in two horizontal rows. These enhance the appearance of the front of the cover 10. The head 20 of each button 1 9 is disposed on the front surface of the cover while the shank 21 extends through respective eyelet holes 22 in the front and back fabric 1 1, 12 of the cover 10 and through the foam core 1 3. A respective stud 23 is pushed or screwed into each button shank 21 so as to hold the button 19 securely with the foam core 13 compressed at that position (see Fig. 3).
In order to wash or clean the cover 10 it is simply lifted off the chipboard or plywood base 17, the buttons 1 9 are reieased from the studs 23 and withdrawn, the clasp fastener 1 4 undone and the foam core 1 3 removed. After washing or cleaning the cover 10 is replaced by the reverse set of operations.
The invention is not limited to the exact details of the foregoing embodiment and many variations are possible. For example, the cover and core may differ in shape and the buttons, if present, may be retained in position by other means than studs.
1. A headboard for a bed comprising a cover which is formed to enclose a cover of foam or similar material and is closed along one edge by a sliding clasp fastener, a pocket being provided on the rear surface of the cover to receive one end of a chip-board or plywood base.
2. A headboard as claimed in claim 1 wherein, for aesthetic reasons, a ruffle is stitched in position around at least a portion of the edge of the cover.
3. A headboard as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the chipboard or plywood base is mounted on legs for attachment to the head of a bed.
4. A headboard as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein shanked buttons extend through eyelet holes provided in the cover and through the cover with the heads of the buttons disposed on the front surface of the cover, means being provided for releasably retaining the buttons in this position.
