Abstract
In a typical example of the invention, the existing duct is a steel gas main which is to be replaced by a new plastics main. A mole is moved up the internal bore of the existing main and cutters with which the mole is provided engage the internal wall of the steel main and longitudinally slit the main at two diametrically opposite points thereon so that the main forms two semi-circular halves. The mole has a cylindrical body rearwardly of the cutters to which a new plastics replacement main is attached so that as the mole moves along the existing main it tows the new main into position within the existing main. The diameter of the mole body is such that it causes the two halves of the slit main to be moved radially outwardly to provide sufficient clearance for the new plastics main to be moved through the existing main. The internal diameter of the new main is equal to that of the existing main.

SPECIFICATION
Improvements in the replacement of ducts
The present invention relates to the replacement or the preparation for replacement of an existing duct such as an existing gas main particularly of steel, with a new duct such as a plastics main.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method for replacing or preparing for replacement an existing duct with a new duct, the method comprising so treating the existing duct that there is sufficient clearance for movement through the existing duct of a new duct with an internal diameter equal to or greater than the internal diameter of the existing duct before treatment.
In a typical example of the invention, the existing duct is a steel gas main which is to be replaced by a new plastics main. A mole is moved up the internal bore of the existing main and cutters with which the mole is provided engage the internal wall of the steel main and longitudinally slit the main at two diametrically opposite points thereon so that the main forms two semi-circular halves. The mole has a cylindrical body rearwardly of the cutters to which a new plastics replacement main is attached so that as the mole moves along the existing main it tows the new main into position within the existing main. The diameter of the mole body is such that it causes the two halves of the slit main to be moved radially outwardly to provide sufficient clearance for the new plastics main to be moved through the existing main. The internal diameter of the new main is equal to that of the existing main.
CLAIM
A method for replacing or preparing for replacement an existing duct with a new duct, the method comprising so treating the existing duct that there is sufficient clearance for movement through the existing duct of a new duct with an internal diameter equal to or greater than the internal diameter of the existing duct before treatment.
