Abstract
An insecticide composition for controlling insects which have an aquatic breeding site comprises a first component which forms either a monomolecular layer or an insoluble foam layer on the surface of a water catchment and a second component which attracts insects to the monomolecular layer or the insoluble foam layer.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Insecticide composition for controlling insects which have an aquatic breeding site
This invention relates to insecticide compositions for controlling insects which have aquatic breeding sites. In the specification of our
Patent No. 1 557 804 there is disclosed a method of controlling the breeding of mosquitos by forming a monomolecular layer on the surface of a water catchment to reduce the number of mosquito pupae and larvae. The monomolecular layer is lethal to many species of mosquito pupae and larvae because the decrease in surface tension causes wetting of the respiratory trumpets of the pupae and larvae and also forms a physical
barrier to surface penetration thus preventing oxygen uptake from the atmosphere by the larvae and pupae.
In the specification of our Patent No.
1 561 088 there is disclosed a method of
controlling the breeding of insects which have an
aquatic phase in their life cycle by forming an
insoluble foam layer on the surface of a water
catchment. This foam layer presents an
impenetrable barrier to pupae and larvae of the
insects, again wetting their respiratory system and
preventing oxygen uptake.
Both these methods are effective in the control
of breeding of the pupae and larvae of insects
which have an aquatic phase in their life cycle. It
has now been found that by incorporating an
insect attracting composition into a
monomolecular layer or an insoluble foam layer on
the surface of a water catchment, ovipositing
adult insects, for example, will be attracted thereto
with consequent wetting of the legs or eggs of the
insect leading to trapping or drowning. In our
initial patent as described above it was not
recognised that adults could be trapped by the
monolayer or by the foam.
According to one aspect of the present
invention there is provided an insecticide
composition for controlling insects which have an
aquatic breeding site comprising a first
component which forms either a monomolecular
layer or an insoluble foam layer on the surface of a
water catchment and a second component which
attracts insects to the monomolecular layer or the
insoluble foam layer.
The first component may be any one or more of
the compounds referred to in the specification of
Patents Nos. 1 557 804 and 1 561 088. Thus the
first component may include at least one
compound of the general formula: CmH2m+, .(OR),OH or CmH2m+ . (OR. OB)nOH and/or at least one compound of the general formula: CmH2n+, . CO. (OR)nOH or CmH2m+, . CO. (OR . OB)nOH where R and B are alkylenes and may be the same or different, n is an integer in the range 1 to 20 and m is an integer in the range 10 to 24. Such a compound is capable of forming a monomolecular layer on the surface of a water catchment.
Alternatively, the first component may be any one or more of an alkyl polyglycol ether, a lipid, a polypeptide or a polymer, each of which is capable of forming an insoluble foam layer on the surface of a water catchment.
The second component may be selected from any one or more of the following types of compound:
(a) Hydrolysed or degraded natural lipids; (b) Alkyl chains (e.g. dimethyloctadecane) and their derivatives;
(c) Mono- and di-glycerides and their derivatives;
(d) Alkyl alcohols (e.g. nonyl alcohol) and derivatives;
(e) Alkyl acids (e.g. capric acid) and derivatives;
(f) Alkyl ketones and carbonyls (e.g. 2nonanone) and derivatives;
(g) Amina acids (e.g. phenylalanine);
(h) Pheromones and ovipositing kairomones.
The second component may consist of natural compounds and/or synthetic compounds.
The first component of an insecticide composition according to the present invention forms a physical rather than chemical barrier to control insects which have aquatic breeding sites, such insects being, for example, mosquito, sandfly or blackfly: it is much less likely that resistant varieties of insect will develop to circumvent physical barriers. The second component of an insecticide composition according to the present invention attracts adult insects to the monomolecular layer or foam layer to trap the insects when they land on the surface of the water catchment. Consequently, insecticide compositions according to the present invention have both larvicide and adulticide properties which are physical in mechanism. Ideally an insecticide composition according to the present invention contains no toxic or pollutive materials and the materials used are preferably biodegradable.
1. An insecticide composition for controlling insects which have an aquatic breeding site comprising a first component which forms either a monomolecular layer or an insoluble foam layer on the surface of a water catchment and a second component which attracts insects to the monomolecular layer or the insoluble foam layer.
2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the first component includes at least one compound of the general formula: CmH2mt . (OR)nOH
