Abstract
A band clip is formed in one piece from a doubled length of wire to provide two annular portions with overlapping ends which are cranked outwardly. A compression spring ML is provided between the cranked ends ES1, ES2 to urge them apart and effect a clamping action on a hose or the like extending through the annular portions. This enables the clip to recover automatically any play resulting from thermal changes or chemical degradation. In a modification, the cranked ends are cranked to a U-shaped configuration to provide a well in which sits and is located a half-moon shaped nipple N1<10>, N1<20>. An adjustment screw threadedly engages one nipple N1<20> and extends therethrough towards the another nipple N1<10> and is formed on its inner end with a collar N1<11>, the compression spring being disposed between this collar and the other nipple so that its compression can be varied by operation of the adjustment screw. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to band clips
This invention relates to improvements in band clips and is concerned with such band clips as are used to clamp an annular body to a member received therein such as, for example, a hose end to a spigot. Such band clips are of annular form.
The invention is particularly concerned with such band clips which may be regarded as being of omega (Q) configuration with the free ends overlapped and being intended to be urged apart in order to exert a clamping action.
Known band clips suffer from the disadvantage that they are unable to recover any play resulting from the degradation of the hose material or from any thermal excursions resulting therein due to temperature variations. In such known band clips, the clamping effect is in large measure due to the inherent elasticity of the material from which they are made and this usually is metal wire.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved band clip in which the disadvantages referred to are materially reduced if not entirely obviated.
According to the present invention there is provided a band clip of substantially omega profile with overlapping ends which are cranked outwardly and a compression spring extending between the cranked ends to urge such ends apart and effect a clamping action and operable automatically to recover any play resulting from thermal changes as well as any chemical degradation of the material being clamped.
Preferably, the clip is formed from one piece of a doubled length of wire with the cranked ends of
U-configuration engaging nipples between which the spring extends.
Embodiments of the invention, in which like references are used to denote like parts, will now be described by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:~
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a band clip according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the band clip being rotated through 1 800, Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2 respectively of a second embodiment of the invention.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 a band clip EF is disclosed for clamping a hose to a spigot or the like inserted into the free end of the hose. The band clip EF is formed from a doubled length of wire to provide annular portions to extend about the hose, with the ends of the annular portion extending outwardly and overlapped, the ends being cranked outwardly to U-profile. The cranked ends are indicated at ES1 and ES2 and respectively engage abutment members provided by nipples ES' and
ES2 having inwardly directed bosses which serve to locate a compression spring ML. The spring ML is normally in compression to urge the cranked ends ES1 and ES2 apart and thereby effect a clamping action.
It will be seen that the doubled length of wire effectively provides a band clip of double omega profile with one set of overlapping ends extending between the runs of the other set of overlapping ends.
When used to connect a hose to a spigot, the cranked ends ES' and ES2 are used towards each other as indicated by the arrows FA' and FA2 either manually or by means of a suitable tool to expand the clip which is threaded over the hose end for a sufficient distance to allow the spigot to be inserted and then released. The spigot is inserted, the band clip is expanded as previously and moved up towards the hose end to also extend about the spigot therein and then released.
The hose is thereby clamped to the spigot by the synergistic effect of the elasticity of the wire from which the clip is made and the effect of the spring
ML which urges the ends ES1 and ES2 apart to cause the clip to exert its clamping effect.
It is an important feature of the band clip of the present invention that it is substantially insensitive to vibrations and is capable of recovering any play or dimensional changes resulting from thermal excursions in the clip or the hose material and/or chemical degradation thereof.
It is a further feature of the band clip described that by changing the compression spring, e.g., its length, a single band clip may be provided with different fastening features so as, for example, to accommodate different hose dimensions.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 the band clip EF is of generally similar construction to that previously described but in this case, the cranked end ES1 engages a half-moon shaped nipple Uni10 and the cranked end ES2 engages a similarly shaped nipple N120 formed with a threaded bore FO which is threadedly engaged by an adjustment screw VI which extends therethrough and is engaged at its tapered inner end in a blind bore in a collar or intermediate nipple No'1. The collar Nl'1 and the nipple Nl' provide abutment members and have inwardly projecting bosses which locate the compression spring ML which extends between the collar NI11 and the nipple No10.
By screwing or unscrewing the screw VI in the bore FO the distance between the collar or intermediate nipple NI11 and the nipple Uni10 can be varied to vary the compression in the spring ML and hence the clamping effect of the band clip.
The half-moon shaped nipples N'O and N20 are machined and configured to cooperate and engage with the cranked ends ES' and ES2 which are U-shaped so that relative movement is prevented, the nipples effectively sitting in the well of the U-shaped cranked ends and being held thereby.
It will be apparent that the band clip described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 is used in the same manner as that described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
