Abstract

A device is proposed for attaching a safety belt (8) directly to a longitudinally adjustable vehicle seat (1). The seat has a slide member (3) which is slidable along a longitudinally extending guide (4). The device comprises a bracket (6) of substantially closed cross-section for the slide member and the guide to extend therethrough. The bracket is pivotable about a transverse axis (9) fixed with respect to the slide member (3). A safety belt attachment point (10) is spaced longitudinally from the pivot axis (9) so that tension (F) in an attached belt (8) will cause the bracket to pivot. The pivoting of the bracket is limited by an abutment (7) on the bracket which engages the guide (4) extending through the bracket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for attaching a safety belt to a vehicle seat This invention relates generally to safety belts, and more particularly, to the attachment of safety belts to motor vehicle seats.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for attaching a safety belt to a longitudinally adjustable vehicle seat having a slide member secured to the seat frame, the slide member being movable along a longitudinal guide secured to the vehicle body, the device comprising a bracket of substantially closed cross-section for the slide member and guide to extend therethrough, the bracket including a pivot for mounting the bracket on the slide member for pivotal movement about a transverse axis fixed relative to the slide member, a safety belt attachment point on the bracket spaced longitudinally from the pivot axis, whereby tension in an attached belt will cause the bracket to pivbt, and an abutment on the bracket for engaging a part extending through the bracket to limit said pivoting of the bracket under tension in the belt.
A device embodying the present invention is most applicable for use in front car seats, however, it may also be used in any other type of vehicle having longitudinally adjustable seats.
In one embodiment the bracket includes an integral channel member and in another embodiment the bracket includes a roller that extends between two side walls of the bracket and forms the abutment.
Where the abutment is a roller the pivoting of the bracket in response to tension of the safety belt is minimised as there is no clearance needed for the bracket to move freely along the londigudinal guide as the seat is adjusted. The above arrangement reduces the recoil of the driver or passenger in an emergency.
A device embodying the invention requires no extra parts or elements for attachment of the safety belt directly to a vehicle seat having conventional longitudinal adjustment means.
The proposed device is simple to construct, requires only a small amount of metal for its fabrication, may easily be mounted on any adjustable vehicle seat, and may offer a high degree of safety in road emergencies.
A better understanding of the invention may be gained from the following description of some preferred embodiments thereof, given with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a side view of a vehicle seat schematically illustrating a device embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a view along the arrow A in Figure 1, the safety belt not being shown; Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2 showing a modified form of the device; and Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 2 showing an alternative modification.
The proposed device for attaching a safety belt to a vehicle seat to be referred hereinafter for the sake of brevity as "the proposed device" is intended for use with a vehicle seat 1 (Figure 1) which is provided with a means 2 for longitudinal sliding adjustment thereof which in the embodiment shown is a slide member 3 and a longitudinal guide 4.
The slide member 3 is a C-shaped runner embracing horizontal flanges of the U-shaped longitudinal guide 4 as is best seen from Figure 2.
These are the most common shapes of slide member and guide used in conventional longitudinal seat adjustment mechanisms.
The slide member 3 is secured at the side of the seat frame and is slidably mounted on the longitudinal guide 4 which is fixed to the floor 5 (Figure 1 ) of the vehicle (not shown). A slide member and a guide may be disposed on either side of the seat 1 to facilitate adjustment of the seat.
The longitudinal adjustment means 2 serves to adjust and stop the seat 1 in the most convenient position for a driver or passenger of a particular heightand build.
The proposed device comprises a bracket 6, hereinafter referred to as a carriage (Figures 1 and 2) having a substantially closed cross-sectional configuration. Functioning as the lower wall ofthe carriage 6 is a transverse rest 7 integral with the side walls of carriage 6 to lock the carriage 6 when it tends to swivel under the action of the force F (Figure 1) exerted on the safety belt 8 by the driver or passenger when the vehicle decelerates in an emergency.
The slide member 3 and longitudinal guide 4 extend through the cross-section of the carriage 6 as best seen in Figure 2, a clearance 8a being provided to ensure free travel of the carriage 6 lengthwise of the guide 4.
The carriage 6 has a pivot 9 (Figures 1 and 2) to allow it to pivot under the action of said force F, as well as to allow the carriage 6 to travel with the slide member 3 when seat 1 is longitudinally adjusted.
As will be explained more fully in due course, the carriage 6 includes a safety belt mounting attachment 10 offset rearwa rdly with respect to the pivot 9 resulting in force F producing a moment of force F about pivot 9 which will cause the carriage 6 to pivot.
The safety belt mounting attachment 10 is formed by a projecting portion of a side wall 11 of the carriage 6 and has a hole 12 (Figure 2) in which a nut 13 is welded.
Secured to the safety belt mounting attachment 10 by means of a bolt 14 threadedly engageable with nut 13 through hole 12 is a rod element 15 (Figures 1 and 2), in this embodiment rod 15 is provided with a lock 16 of the safety beltS, the lock 16 receiving a catch 16a (Figure 1) secured to the safety belt 8.
The pivot 9 is conventientlyformed by a pin 17 (Figures 1 and 2) of carriage 6, and a pivot mounting 18 connected to the slide member 3 for example by welding.
Referring to Figure 3, in another embodiment of the carriage the transverse rest is a pin 19 mounted to define a clearance 8a between the pin and the guide 4, which simplifies the carriage structurally making it easily dismountable.
Referring now to Figure 4, an alternative modified form of the carriage is shown where a roller 20 is used as the transverse rest, enabling the transverse rest to be secured under the longitudinal guide without a clearance. Such a construction enables the pivotal movement of the carriage due to the force F exerted by the safety belt when the vehicle brakes in an emergency to be reduced, minimizing the recoil of the driver or passenger from the seat back due to inertia.
The device described in Figures 1 and 2 operates in the following manner.
Upon sudden deceleration of the vehicle, for example due to a collision, the human body occupying the seat 1 tends to continue its movement under the action of inertial forces. The safety belt 8 is intended to prevent such movement and retain the body in the seat 1. In turn, the human body exerts the force F on the safety belt 8 and consequently on the mounting attachment 10 in the carriage 6.
Under the action of the force Fthe carriage 6 tends to pivot with respect to the longitudinal guide 4 causing the rest 7 to abut guide 4, locking the carriage 6.
If the magnitude of the force F is substantial, a further increase in the force F causes the transverse rest 7 to deform the longitudinal guide 4. The thus iocked position of the carriage 6 depends on how securely guide 4 is fixed to the floor 5 of the vehicle and also on the resistance of the guide 4 to the compressive force imparted thereto by the rest 7.
The deformation of guide 4 absorbs some of the shock energy, and thus the load exerted by the human body on the safety belt is reduced.
Prototypes of the device embodying the present invention have successfully passed through a series of tests carried out to meet the requirements specified by UN ECE Regulations and have proved to be sufficiently reliable. Test results of the proposed device in car seats have also been favourable.
It will be appreciated that the proposed device is simple to construct and reliable in operation. The device can easily be installed on any adjustable vehicle seat of the type described solving the rather difficult design problem of fitting a safety belt directly to a vehicle seat.
