Abstract
Authentication of documents is achieved by securing over at least part of the document, a hologram which is difficult or impossible to photo-copy and which cannot be removed without damage. A clear plastics label (12) is firmly secured, by an adhesive layer, over the area (11) of a cheque (10) where the monetary value of the cheque has been written in figures. The label incorporates emulsion layers (14) which carry a hologram, and the cheque is marked (at 17) to show that holographic authentication is required. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Method and means for preventing counterfeiting of documents
This invention relates to security and, more specifically, to the prevention of counterfeiting or falsification of documents as in the fraudulent conversion of cheques.
The increasing general problem of counterfeiting is, of course, well-known and, as technology advances, the equipment available to the counterfeiter increases his capabilities. One example of this advance has been the colour photo-copier which has enabled counterfeiters to produce high-quality reproductions of documents, such as cheques, and even signed cheques.
It has been proposed to apply a stronglyadhesive transparent film over a document such as a cheque or an identity card, to prevent tampering and, for example, replacing the authentic signature with a false signature, or replacing the original figures on a cheque with false and inflated figures. However, such coverings may not prevent a counterfeiter making one or more photo-copies of the document and then applying a film to "authenticate" the photo-copy.
It is an object of the present invention to further improve the security of documents such as cheques.
According to the present invention, a transparent film carrying a hologram is applied securely over, for example, the figures written on a cheque.
Preferably, the hologram is a reflection hologram which is virtually impossibie to photograph and is extremely difficult to reproduce.
Thus, the cheque not only carries very secure authentication, but also is virtually impossible to duplicate, and the degree of security can be increased even further by regularly changing the image(s) which appear in the hologram.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be decided, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a bank cheque to which a transparent film-like label carrying a hologram has been secured and,
Figure 2 is a section to an enlarged scale showing the hologram-carrying label in greater detail.
Referring to Fig. 1, a cheque 10 has been written in the usual manner including inserting the sum to be transferred, in figures, in the usual box 11. According to the invention, a clear plastics film or label 12 is firmly secured, by adhesive, over the box and thus over the figures. The label carries a reflection hologram and is illustrated in greater detail in Fig. 2.
The label 12 comprises a base formed of clear polyester film 13, emulsion layers 14, and a layer of strong adhesive 15 which secures the label to the cheque. The hologram which is carried in the several emulsion layers 14 can be relatively complex, with possibly twenty-two layers of "information" which creates the required image; the layers 14 themselves are standard, but preferably of a physically and chemically fragile nature.
The hologram image may present the name and/or emblem of the customer of the bank which issues the cheques, together with attractive (kalogram) designs such as the coin indicated at 16, or a display of coins, and further information such as a date or time code, a payee or payee-category identification, or a geographical mark.
In relation to bank cheques as described above, the issuing banks will provide each of their relevant customers with appropriate cheques which are printed at 17 with a notification that hologram authentication is required.
Also provided is a machine for dispensing hologram labels from a reel of the adhesive labels mounted on a paper-like backing strip.
The machine, which may be manually operated or at least partly automatically operated, will be accompanied by two separate keys for access, and an appropriate record book will also be included.
In use, the customer will write the hologram-authentication-required cheque in the normal manner, and will then have an adhesive label applied by the machine over the "box" in which the numbers indicating the sum of the cheque are written. The adhesive is sufficiently strong to ensure that the relatively fragile surface of the cheque would be damaged if the hologram label were to be removed, and the hologran itself may also be damaged in the event of unauthorised removal. The authenticated cheque will then be presented to the bank of the payee, where it will be observed from the printing on the cheque that payment is subject to the appearance of an appropriate hologram image over the numbers.
The payee's bank may refer back to the issuing bank before payment and, after payment, the cheque is returned to the issuing bank and then to the payer, either or both of which have a further check made, and at least the further check will include confirmation of any information appearing within the hologram. It is envisaged that, at least initially, the invention will be applicable to cheques of relatively high value, and it should be explained that such cheques are usually presented and cleared very promptly, usually within twentyfour or forty-eight hours.
To increase security even further, the hologram image might be altered at regular or irregular intervals, in respect not only of information which may be changed automatically, but also of images such as the display of coins which can be modified at will.
The high degree of security which results from the present invention arises from the vir tual impossibility of completely copying a cheque carrying a hologram; in the photo-copy, the hologram image would at most appear as a light blur. Further, the attempted removal of a holgram label from one cheque to be applied to another (counterfeit) cheque may result in the destruction of the image if the emulsion layers are made sufficiently fragile, and will also damage the original cheque. The application of the labels must, of course, be carefully supervised, but the provision of a dispenser machine with a meter and with at least one, and preferably two, operating keys should ensure a high degree of security in the issue of each label. It is also envisaged that the labels themselves will be numbered (consecutively).
Furthermore, the hologram itself may be developed to have, for example, a proprietary coat of arms as a 'virtual' or background image, together with a 'real' image which is not clearly visible without adequate or special lighting, or which may be rendered only machine-readable.
In cheques specifically intended to be authenticated as described above, it is desirable to have a solid coloured fugitive tablet, i.e. an area with water-soluble colouring. Also, the cheque number may be repeated in the region covered by the hologram, as at 18 above the box 11 which may be slightly reduced in height.
It will be appreciated that the invention is applicable to the authentication of documents other than bank cheques, for example, airline tickets, bankers' drafts or signed contacts.
