Abstract
A spade or fork designed to enable material to be moved from a low level and raised to a working height, e.g. for loading a wheelbarrow with material moved from ground level, without requiring the user to bend or stoop comprises a pivoted support leg by means of which the load can be raised to a selected height, this being brought about by the natural backwards motion of the user. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Self lifting spade 1. Technical Field: This invention relates to a manual implement designed to minimise the physical strain on the user. Where reference is made to the term "spade" it is intended that the implement head is exchangeable for a fork or shovel blade, employing the same principle of operation.
Background: Spades are well known implements used in many situations in Agriculture and Industry, as well as domestic applications.
Their operation will generally involve a considerable amount of bending and stooping.
This can place an unnecessary strain on the users spine and may well result in physical injury.
Essential Technical Features: The essential feature of this invention is a swinging support leg, upon which the load is raised. This is brought about by the natural backwards motion of the user and with little effort, although no springs or other assisting devices are employed. The load is delivered to a height selected by the user, at which to move it as required. Eg: loading a wheelbarrow with earth moved from ground level. The action does not require the user to stoop, or take the weight while in a bent posture. Versatility of the spade is improved by the ability to detach the support leg for use as a general purpose implement. Eg: turning over loose soil without lifting. In this application the shaft length employed is desirable as it minimises the amount of stooping that is required.

Figure 2-the first stage of operation. The blade is driven into the ground and the shaft is levered to free the earth, or material to be raised. The support leg falls to the ground.
Figure 3-The foot is removed from the blade and applies pressure to the base of the support leg, fixing its position on the ground.
Figure 4-the shaft is gripped in the conventional way. The natural backwards motion of the user causes the blade and load to rise up on the support leg to a height where the load can be moved or unloaded as required.

With regard to implements for manual use, it is claimed that the essential feature of this invention is the swinging support leg, upon which the load is raised up to a selected height.
