Abstract

A disk brake comprises a disk 12 and a caliper 13, of the sliding pin type, carrying split pins 18 and 19 supporting a brake pad 11B and another brake pad 11A which is urged towards the disc by an actuator piston sliding in a bore in the caliper under hydraulic pressure. A wire spring 28 has V-shaped parts 26 and 27 engaging notches in the brake pads and tending to push the pads apart causing the actuator piston to retract in the bore when hydraulic pressure is relieved. The parts 26 and 27 are non-planar and each overlies and reacts against an upper surface of the caliper and against the underside of the respective pin 18, 19 and urges the brake pads, in a direction radially inwardly of the disc, against the pins to inhibit pad rattle. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A disc brake caliper assembly This invention relates to Disc Brake Caliper Assemblies of the kind in which a pair of brake pads are supported by a brake caliper for engagement in use with a rotatable disc.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved disc brake caliper assembly.
According to the invention there is provided a disc brake caliper assembly in which a pair of brake pads are supported by pad support means for engagement in use with a rotatable disc, the caliper assembly including a caliper body supporting an actuator member used to urge the brake pads into engagement with the brake disc, wherein the caliper assembly further includes s spring clip means to provide both an anti-rattle biassing force to the brake pads and a retraction force to the actuator member.
Preferably, the spring clip means in use is held in a deformed condition in two directions, in a first direction by reaction against the brake pad to retract the actuator member and in a second direction by abutment against the brake pads and the caliper body and reaction against the pad support means to reduce vibration of the brake pads.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a disc brake caliper assembly according to the invention; Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line il-ll on Figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross-section on the line Ill-Ill of the cross-sectioned brake caliper assembly shown in Figure 2.
With reference to Figures 1 to 3 there is shown a pair of friction members in the form of brake pads 11A and 11B for engagement with a rotatable element in the form of a brake dlse 12. The brake caliper has a body 13 which defines a cylinder bore 14 closed at one end by an end wall 15 and at the other end by an actuator member in the form of a piston 16. The piston 16 is movable from the end wall 15 by fluid pressure in the cylinder bore 14, to apply the brake. The piston 16 is sealed to the cylinder bore 14 by a pressure seal 85. The fluid pressure is admitted to the cylinder bore 14 through an inlet port 17.
The brake pads 11A and 11B are supported by pad support means in the form of the split pins 18 and 19 each of which is engaged with respective aligned apertures in the brake pads 11A and 11B and in the caliper body 13. To prevent the split pins 18 and 19 from becoming dislodged one leg 24 and 25 of each pin 18 and 19 is bent back.
To prevent the brake pads 18 and 19 from vibrat ing or rattling in use a spring clip means is provided in the form of two spaced apart resilient arms 26 and 27 of spring wire each of which is of V-shaped contour. Each of the arms 26 and 27 has two limbs 26A and 26B, 27A and 27B one of which 26A or 27A is jointed to the corresponding limb 27A or 26A of the other arm 27 or 26 to form a one-piece spring clip 28. The other limb 26B, 27B of each arm 26, 27 has a hook-shaped end portion 26C, 27C to connect the respective arm 26 or 27 to the brake pad 11A.
To assemble the spring clip 28 the limbs 26A, 26B and 27A, 27B of each arm 26 and 27 are deflected towards each other thereby reducing the included angle therebetween and inserted between the two pads 11A and 11B. The split pins 18 and 19 are then inserted through the respective holes in the caliper body 13, each arm 26, 27 being pushed slightly towards the adjacent brake pads 11A and 11B to allow the passage of the respective split pin 18 or 19 with which it co-operates. The spring clip 28 is therefore held in a deformed or stressed condition in two directions, in a first direction by reaction against the brake pads 11A and 11B and in a second direction by abutment with the brake pads 11A and 11B and the caliper body 13 and reaction against the split pins 18 and 19.
The deformation of the spring clip 28 in the first direction ensures that after each application of the brake the brake pads 11A and 11B will be moved out of engagement with the brake disc 12 and the piston 16 will be returned fully to a rest position.
The deformation of the spring clip 28 in the second direction prevents the brake pads 11A and 11B from untoward vibration or rattle.
To assist with the location of the spring clip 28 in the brake pads 11A and 11B each of the brake pads 11A and 11B has two hooked shaped recesses 29 in which the co-operating portion of each limb 26A, 26B, 27A, 27B is located.
An adjuster mechanism 20 is provided to alter the fall back or rest position of the piston 16. The adjuster mechanism 20 includes an adjustable abutment means to limit return travel of the piston 16. The adjustable abutment means comprises an extendable strut having two engaged screw threaded adjuster parts one of which is a screw member 22 and the other of which is a nut member 23.
A cone clutch means is provided between the nut member 23 and the piston 16. The cone clutch being operative to allow only extension of the extendable strut. The screw member 22 has a screw threaded shank 31 and a head 32.
The head 32 of the screw member 22 co-operates with a setting means interposed between the adjuster mechanism 20 and the actuator body 13.
The setting means includes an internally threaded sleeve 36 and a threaded plunger 37 threadably engaged in the bore of the sleeve 36.
In order to apply the brake in its first or primary mode of operation fluid pressure is admitted to the cylinder bore 14 through the inlet port 17, the fluid pressure displacing the piston 16 away from the end wall 15 towards the brake disc 12. The piston 16 thrusts against the brake pad 11A causing it to frictionally engage the brake disc 12. Simultaneously, the reaction force on the end wall 15 urges the actuator body 13 in the other direction so that the other brake pad 11B is also brought into frictional engagement with the brake disc 12.
Although the invention has been described solely with reference to a hydraulically operated brake caliper of the sliding pin type it is not limited to such a type of brake caliper and can be used in any disc brake caliper assembly in which it is desirable to reduce brake pad rattle and provide a positive retraction force to the piston or actuator member.
