Abstract

A method for the manufacture of cylindrical sound records in materials other than wax uses a mould carrying a record in negative on its bore 17 and having suitable closures, into which a resin is introduced, the mould being then rotated or shook so that the fluid takes up the shape of the inner surface of the mould while that resin solidifies. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A method for the manufacture of cylindrical sound records This invention relates to the manufacture of cylindrical sound records. In previous methods of manufacture of cylinder records a wax-like substance was cast into records or a celluloid tube was blow moulded into a record; in this new method records can be produced in other materials more simply and economically.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing cylindrical sounds records in a material other than wax comprising a mould carrying a record in negative on its bore and with suitable closures into which a fluid is introduced, and a method of rotating or shaking the mould so that the fluid takes up the shape of the inner surface of the mould whilst that fluid solidifies.
Two specific embodiments of this invention will now be given by way of examples with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a view of a cylindrical mould Figure 2 is a view of a cylindrical mould with moulding and cutting edges Figure 3 is a view of a finished record.
In the first example a mould carrying a record in negative on its bore 17 as figure 1 has a moulding compound for example a catalysed liquid resin poured inside and is closed, the mould is then rotated causing the liquid to take up the shape of the record surface 17; when the liquid has solidified the rotation is stopped and the moulding removed longitudinally.
In the second example a mould carrying a record in negative on its bore 18 figure 2 and including the moulding and cutting edges 14 and 15 that will form the required internal surfaces of the finished record is used. Into this mould a measured amount of a moulding compound, for example PVC paste, is introduced, the mould is then closed and rotated while the compound takes up the shape of the inner surfaces of the mould and is then caused to solidify for example by the action of heat; the rotation is then stopped and the moulding removed and in this example resembles figure 3, the removal of surplus material being facilitated by the cutting edges.
1. A method for manufacturing cylindrical sound records in a material other than wax comprising a mould carrying a record in negative on its bore and having suitable closures, into which a fluid is introduced and a method of rotating or shaking the mould so that the fluid takes up the shape of the inner surface of the mould while that fluid solidifies.
2. A method for manufacturing cylindrical sound records as in Claim 1 wherein a means is provided within the mould to form the internal surfaces of the finished record.
