Abstract
Separation apparatus for separating oversized pieces of material 34 from the discharge flow of material 22 from a conveyor, the apparatus including a support surface 25 positioned adjacent to and below the upper peripheral surface of the discharge roller of a continuous belt conveyor transporting mineral pieces, the support surface being arranged to define a gap 30 through which mineral pieces can be discharged from the conveyor, objects bridging the gap being pushed onto the support surface to be separated from the flow of mineral. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Separation apparatus
The present invention relates to an apparatus for separating pieces in excess of a predetermined size from a flow of material. In particular, the present invention is concerned with removal of lengths of wood, metal girders from the flow of mineral pieces whilst being transported along a belt conveyor system.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided separation apparatus including a support surface positioned adjacent to and below the upper peripheral surface of the discharge roller of a continuous belt conveyor transporting mineral pieces, the support surface being arranged to define a gap through which mineral pieces can be discharged from the conveyor, objects bridging the gap being pushed onto the support surface to be separated from the flow of mineral.
Preferably the support surface is inclined so that objects pushed onto it slide away from the conveyor. Preferably the gap is defined by an arcuate recess formed in the support surface.
Various aspects of the present invention are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of the discharge end of a conveyor and apparatus according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a schematic side view of the arrangement shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a schematic plan view of the arrangement shown in Figure 1.
The apparatus shown in the Figures comprises a belt conveyor 20 which transports mineral pieces 22 to discharge over a discharge roller 23. The discharged mineral may fall into a hopper (not shown) or onto another conveyor (not shown). Located adjacent to the discharge roller 23 is a separate apparatus 24 which basically comprises a support surface 25 located below the upper peripheral surface of the discharge roller 23. Preferably the surface 25 is defined by a plate of sheet metal and is inclined downwardly away from the roller 23. As seen in Figure 1, the plate may conveniently form the upper wall of a box construction 29. The edge of the plate nearest to the roller 23 is provided with an arcuate recess 30 which defines a gap through which the mineral can be discharged from the roller 23 without interference.The dimensions and shape of the recess may be varied to cater for different rates of flow of mineral being discharged from the conveyor.
In the event of a piece of material greater than a predetermined size being conveyed to the discharge roller 23, for instance a length of wood 34, it bridges the gap whilst still being supported by the conveyor and so is deposited on the support surface 25 as is schematically illustrated in the drawings. Continued motion of the conveyor causes the piece to be pushed further on to the surface. Preferably, the surface is inclined downwardly away from the discharge conveyor sufficiently so as to encourage the piece to slide away from the gap.
It is to be appreciated that a belt conveyor in this specification not only includes conveyors having a continuous belt strip but also similar types of conveyors such as those having separate flights connected by a, pair of continuous chains.
11. Separation apparatus for separating oversized pieces of material from the discharge flow of material from a conveyor, the apparatus including a support surface positioned adjacent to and below the upper peripheral surface of the discharge roller of a continuous belt conveyor transporting mineral pieces, the support surface being arranged to define a gap through which mineral pieces can be discharged from the conveyor, objects bridging the gap being pushed onto the support surface to be separated from the flow of mineral.
2. Separation apparatus according to Claim 1 wherein the support surface is inclined so that, in use, objects pushed onto it slide away from the conveyor.
3. Separation apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2 wherein the gap is defined by a arcuate recess formed in the support surface.
4. Separation apparatus substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
