Abstract
A package comprises an open-topped box and a closure element. The box has a front wall made up of panels (8, 18) which define an opening for revealing goods in the box. The closure element has a front panel (38) which covers the opening. The closure element is retained on the box by lugs (12) on end panels (4) of the box which engage slots (36) in the closure element. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A package
This invention relates to a package comprising an open topped box and a closure element for the box. The invention is particularly, although not exclusively, concerned with a package for produce such as cartons of eggs, in which the box has an opening which, after removal of the closure element, exposes the produce for retail saile.
According to the present invention there is provided a package comprising an open topped box and a closure element for the box, the box comprising front and rear walls which are disposed opposite each other and are interconnected by end walls, the front wall having an opening for exposing the contents of the box, the closure element comprising a top panel, for closing the top of the box, and a front panel, for positioning adjacent the front wall of the box to cover, at least partially, the opening, the top panel of the closure element and -the end walls of the box having cooperating means for retaining the closure element in position with respect to the box.
In a preferred embodiment in accordance with the invention, the front panel abuts the inside face of the front wall. The cooperating means preferably comprises interlocking elements, for example lugs provided at the top edges of the end walls, which engage in slots in the top panel. The lugs may project above the slots so that, when two of the packages are stacked one above the other, the lugs of the lower package engage the slots provided in the lower region of the upper package.
The cooperating means may also, or alternatively, comprise end closure flaps hinges to the top panel, which lie on the outer faces of the respective end walls and which are provided with retaining tabs which are tucked behind the end walls.
The closure element may also have a rear panel for positioning adjacent the rear wall of the box, preferably on the inside of the box. The rear panel may be shorter than the front panel. The rear wall of the box may have an opening like that of the front wall, but of a smaller size.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shdws a blank for a box;
Figure 2 shows a blank for a closure member for the box;
Figure 3 shows the erected box with the closure member positioned for assembly with the box;
Figure 4 shows the closure element during movement into the box;
Figure 5 shows a final stage of assembly of the closure element with the box; and
Figure 6 shows a completed package comprising the-box and the closure element.
The blank shown in Figure 1 comprises a base panel 2 to which end panels 4 are hinged along creases 6. A front lateral wall panel 8 and a rear lateral wall panel 10 are provided at opposite edges of each end wall panel 4. At the edge opposite the crease 6, each end wall panel 4 has two lugs 12 and a trapezoidal cut-away recess 14. At the inner corners of the recess 14, there are oblique nicks 16.
As well as the end wall panels 4, the base panel 2 is also hinged to front and rear lower wall panels 18 and 20, each of which is provided with oblique creases 22 and 24.
Each end wall panel 4 is provided with ventilation and carrying holes 26, and two slots 28, spaced apart by the same distance as the lugs 12, are provided in the creases 6.
The blank shown in Figure 2 comprises a top panel 30 to the ends of which are hinged end closure flaps 32 provided with tabs 34. Slots 36 are provided in the creases at which the top panel 30 meets the end closure flaps 32, these slots 36, like the slots 28, being spaced apart by the same distance as the lugs 12.
A front panel 38 and a shorter rear panel 40 are connected to the top panel 30 at opposite edges.
The blank of Figure 1 is erected to form a box by turning up the end wall panels 4 until they are perpendicular to the base panel 2, and bending inwardly the front and rear lateral wall panels 8 and 10. The front and rear lower wall panels 18 and 20 are then folded upwardly and bonded, by the triangular portions outside the creases 22 and 24, to the front and rear lateral wall panels 8 and 10. The erected box may be collapsed by pushing the front and rear lower wall panels 18 and 20 inwards, at the same time bringing the end wall panels 4 towards the base 2.
The erected box is shown in Figure 3 with the closure element of Figure 2 positioned above it, with the panels 32, 38 and 40 all folded downwards to lie at right angles to the top panel 30.
To fit the closure panel to the box, it is moved downwardly, as shown in Figure 4, the front panel 38 passing behind the front lateral wall panels 8 and the front lower wall panel 18. Similarly, although not shown in Figure 4, the rear panel 40 is fitted inside the box, lying against the rear lateral wall panels 10. When the closure element has been pushed fully home, as shown in Figure 5, the lugs 12 extend through the slots 28. The end closure flaps 32 lie outside the end walls 4, but the tabs 34 are pushed inwardly, as indicated by an arrow A, so as to be tucked behind the end walls 4, as indicated in Figure 6. The materiai of the end walls 6 yields for this purpose, this being permitted by the nicks 16.
It will be appreciated from Figure 6 that the lugs 12 project upwardly beyond the top panel 30. They are thus able to enter the slots 28 of a similar package placed on top of it. This provides stacking stability.
The dimensions of the lower rear wall panel 20 and of the rear panel 40 may be such that, in the assembled package, a gap is left between them. As well as saving material, this, in conjunction with the holes 26, provides ventilation for the-contents of the package.
