Description

SPECIFICATION Punch/kick practice pads This invention relates to a punch/kick practice pad.
Punch/kick practice pads are used by Martial Artists to develop speed, power and hand/eye co-ordination in striking techniques. They are made up of a shock absorbent substance i.e. foam rubber, Kapok, etc. which is enclosed in a suitably hard wearing material and with a handle device or glove attached in order that the pad may be held securely.
However punch/kick practice pads are expensive, in as much as, a separate pad is required for either kicking or punching. Also in order that a full range of hand and foot techniques may be practiced in combination, several pads are required as each pad has only one striking surface. Therefore, if the pad holder has a kick pad in one hand and a punch pad in the other it is necessary for him/her to continually alter their positions to allow the striker to use techniques with either hand or foot, as each pad has only a one sided striking surface. Moreover, it is hazardous for the holder to continually alter position as he/she is in danger of being accidentally injured whilst doing so.
According to the present invention, there is provided an all round striking surface, made up of sturdy material i.e. leather, cloth or vinyl etc. covering a shock absorbent and resilient substance such as foam rubber, latex, Kapok or the like, in the form of a heavily padded sleeve, sealed and padded at one end, inside is a handle and an extra layer of padding for additional protection of the holder's arm. Once in position the holder's hand and much of the forearm is totally enclosed and protected. Therefore, held in position the pad may be struck with either hand or foot, from either left or right sides and also from above, without the position of the pad being altered, enabling its user to practice a full range of techniques without the inconvenience of constantly moving the pad.
Figure 1 shows in perspective the underside of the punch/kick pad.
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the pad.
Figure 3 shows a side view of the pad.
Figure 4 shows a sectional view of the pad.
Referring to the diagram, the pad comprises a striking surface, Nos. 1 & 4, which make up its sides and top.
In order to hold the pad the hand is inserted into the sleeve, No. 3, gripping the handle No. 8. The holder's arm is held firm by the close fitting padded section No. 9 inside the sleeve. Once in position the hand and much of the forearm is totally enclosed, allowing maximum protection to the holder.
Figure 2 shows the striking surfaces Nos. 1 & 4 which is represented as being circular, however it could be oval, rectangular, head shaped or octagonal.
Figure 3 shows the padded top No. 4 which is represented as flat but could be semi-circular, bullet shaped or pointed.
1. A punch/kick pad comprising of a thickly padded sleeve, sealed and padded at one end and providing a striking surface on its top and sides.
2. A punch/kick pad as claimed in claim 1 wherein the guide means, 3, is provided to insert the hand and forearm.
3. A punch/kick pad as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a handle, No. 8, and extra padded interior, No. 9 is provided to hold the pad firmly.
4. A punch/kick pad as claimed in claim 1 wherein the outer sides Nos. 1 & 4 are a striking surface to allow maximum variation of attacking techniques without altering its position.
5. A punch/kick pad as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the holder's hand and much of the forearm is totally enclosed and protected on all sides.
6. A punch/kick pad as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the padding No. 7 is made up of varying types of up to 3" thick foam rubber or shock absorbent material, Nos. 6, 5, 9, and covered in sturdy material to contain the padding whilst also acting as a striking surface.
7. A punch/kick pad as claimed in any preceding claim substantially described herein with reference to Figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawing.
