Abstract
214,369. Bakewell, B. Feb. 6, 1923. Plastic compositions containing oxychlorides. - A cement which does not corrode iron is made by adding ferrous chloride to magnesium oxide, the proportions being at least 30 parts of the crystalline chloride to 100 parts of magnesia. The chloride may be added as crystals or in solution. Fillers such as asbestos, sand, cork, may also be added, preferably those which do not absorb water to a great extent being used as excess of water destroys the non-corrosive property. For this reason the water added should not exceed 70 parts to 100 parts of magnesium oxide. Several examples are given in the Specification of which the following is typical : 100 parts of magnesium oxide, 45 parts of crystalline ferrous chloride, 15 parts of cork, and 62 parts of water. The solids are mixed dry, the water is gradually added, and the mass is mixed and used as rapidly as possible. Specification 1870/79, [Class 1, Acids, alkalies, &c.], is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the protochlorides of any metals forming two series of salts may be employed, and an example is given containing 15 parts of ferrous chloride to 100 parts of magnesium oxide.
