Abstract
A golf putter has a shaft with a conventional grip 11 and a putter head 12 with a golf ball striking face 15 which is forwardly inclined to the vertical to gives contained acute angle, preferably in the range 65-85 DEG , between the plane of the ground engaging face 13 and the striking face 15. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A golf putter
This invention relates to a construction of golf putter.
The function of a golf putter is to allow the golfer propel a golf ball on the green towards and hopefully into the hole. Many expert golfers consider it very important that the golf ball should be hit by the golf putter in such a manner that top spin is imparted to the golf ball. The experts state that a putt which imparts top spin to the golf ball allows the golf ball to run true and roll better on the green and to "hold its line" to the hole. While the degree of importance to be attached to imparting top spin to the golf ball for good putting is, like most aspects of golf, a matter of debate all experts are agreed that for good putting imparting top spin to a golf ball is definitely advantageous.
The present invention is directed towards providing a construction of golf putter which is adapted in use to impart top spin to a golf ball when the golf ball is correctly hit by the striking face of the putter. The present invention provides a golf putter comprising a shaft member to one end of which is securely attached a putter head having a golf ball striking face forwardly inclined to the vertical. Preferably the golf ball striking face is forwardly inclined to the vertical at an angle greater than 450. It has been found that a striking face forwardly inclined to the vertical at an angle within the range 80--850 gives very good results.
The invention will be understood from the following description of embodiments thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a golf putter according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the golf putter of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the golf putter of Fig. 1, with a golf ball shown in dotted outline;
Fig. 4 is a front view of a second embodiment of a golf putter according to the present invention;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the golf putter of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view from the rear of the head of the golf putter of Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1-3 of the accompanying drawings the golf putter comprises a shaft member 10 having at one end thereof a grip member 11 and attached to the opposite end thereof a putter head 12. The putter head 12 has a ground engaging face 13, a top face 14 to which the shaft member 11 is attached and a golf ball striking face 1 5. The striking face 15 is forwardly inclined to the vertical and the contained angle A between the striking face 1 5 of the plane of the ground engaging face 13 is approximately 650 and the vertical height of the said inclined face 1 5 is approximately equal to the diameter of the large size golf ball (1.64 inch).Referring to Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings a golf ball 16 is shown in dotted outline in a position adjacent the striking face 1 5 of the putter for putting of the golf ball 1 6.
Referring to Figs. 4--6 6 of the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a second embodiment of the invention and like parts have been given the same reference numbers as for the above described first embodiment with reference to Figs.
1-3 of the accompanying drawings. In this embodiment the shaft 11 is secured to the rear face 1 4a of the putter head 12 through a socket member 1 7 formed integrally with the putter head 12. Further the rear of the putter head is suitably designed to give a good weight distribution and an attractive appearance to the putter head. In this embodiment the angle A of the striking face 1 5 with the plane of the ground engaging face 13 of the putter head is 800.
The drawings, in particular Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings, clearly illustrate that the putter hitting the golf ball imparts top spin to the golf ball since the striking face 1 5 must hit the golf ball above its horizontal centre line. The general hitting action imparts an upwardly directed striking force to the ball since the striking face is forwardly and upwardly inclined.
The putter head 12 may be made from any suitable metal, plastics or wood material, while the shaft member and grip member of the golf putter are made from conventional golf club shaft and grip materials.
1. A golf putter comprising a shaft member to one end of which is securely attached a putter head having in use a ground engaging face and a golf ball striking face which is forwardly inclined to the vertical whereby the contained acute angle between the said striking face of the putter head and the plane of the ground engaging face of the putter head is greater than 450.
2. A golf putter as claimed in Claim 1 in which the said contained angle is in the range 65--850.
3. A golf putter substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in
Figs. 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
4. A golf putter substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in Figs. 1 6 of the accompanying drawings.
