Abstract

A wall tie comprises an elongate central portion (14) which extends, in use, within the cavity between two leaves of a cavity wall and which interconnects a pair of end portions (16, 18) securable in opposite leaves of a cavity wall and a disc or plate shaped insulation locating member (12) mounted on or secured to the elongate central portion intermediate the ends thereof and extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the central portion. At least one formation (20, 22) which may be substantially V-shaped, is provided in the central portion and displaced to one side of the locating member for encouraging moisture to drip off the central portion into the cavity. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A wall tie This invention relates to a wall tie and particularly but not exclusively to such a tie for locating thermal insulation material in a cavity wall.
It is fairly common practice these days to provide sheets of thermal insulation material, such as of polystyrene, in cavity walls. It is desirable to retain this insulation against the inner surface of one of the leaves of the wall to thus prevent the insulation from bridging the cavity and thereby defining a moisture conducting path between the inner and outer leaves of the wall.
It is an object of the invention to provide a wall tie in a convenient form.
The invention provides a wall tie comprising an elongate central portion which extends, in use, within the cavity between the two leaves of a cavity wall and which interconnects a pair of end portions securable in the opposite leaves of a cavity wall, a disc or plate shaped insulation locating member mounted on or secured to the elongate central portion intermediate the ends thereof and extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the central portion, and at least one formation in the central portion and displaced to one side of the locating member for encouraging moisture to drip off the central portion into the cavity.
Preferably, the central portion has two spaced formations, the locating member being mounted therebetween.
Desirably, the central and end portions of the wall tie are formed of rigid metal wire, the ends of the wire being formed into any suitable shape, such as inter alia a triangular shape, to define said end portions of the wall tie.
Advantageously, the locating member is formed of plastics material, such as polyethylene, and has a centrally disposed aperture which communicates with the peripheral edge of the member by way of a slot which enables the locating member to be fitted onto said elongate central portion.
Conveniently, the formations are substantially V-shaped.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a side view of one embodiment of a wall tie according to the invention, Figure 2 is an end view of the wall tie shown in Fig. 1, and Figure 3 is a plan view of one end of the wall tie shown in Fig.1.
Referring to the drawings, the wall tie shown therein comprises a body 10 and a wheel-like disc shaped insulation locating member 1 2. The body 10 is formed of stiff metal wire suitably coated with, inter alia, zinc or plastics material and has an elongate central portion 1 4 which interconnects a pair of triangularly shaped coplanar end portions 1 6 and 1 8. The central portion 14 has two spaced V-shaped formations 20 and 22 which are disposed in a common plane normal to the plane in which the end portions 1 6 and 1 8 are disposed and which are located equidistantly from a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the central portion and passing through a point midway between the ends thereof.
The disc-shaped member 1 2 is formed of plastics material, such as polyethylene, and has a centrally disposed aperture 24 which communicates with the peripheral edge of the member by way of a radially directed slot 26.
The slot 26 enables the member 1 2 to be snap fitted onto the central portion between the formations 20 and 22.
In use, a plurality of like wall ties are located at spaced intervals in a cavity wall.
The end portions 1 6 and 1 8 are secured in opposite leaves respectively of the wall so as to lie in a horizontal plane and the formations normally project downwardly into the cavity between the leaves and if left exposed serve to encourage moisture to drip off the central portion into the cavity and thus preclude or at least substantially reduce the possibility of moisture leakage between the ends of the central portion of the tie. The disc-shaped member 1 2 serves to retain sheet insulation material, such as sheet polystyrene against the inner surface of one of the leaves of the cavity wall for the purpose hereinbefore described.
The end portions need not necessarily be of triangular shape, but may for instance be circular, or may indeed simply be bent so as to extend in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the central portion.
The insulation locating member need not necessarily be disc shaped, but may instead be a plate-shaped element having three or more sides, preferably of equal length. Moreover, the insulation locating member may be formed of metal, advantageously having a protective coating, and in this case the locating member may be secured to the central portion such as by welding.
One of the formations 20, 22 may be omitted but in this case it will be necessary for the person locating the wall tie in a cavity wall to ensure that the wall tie is orientated with the single formation provided remote from the leaf of the wall against which the sheet insulation material is to be retained.
The body 10 and in some circumstances the locating member 1 2 may be formed of stainless steel in which case a protective coating will not be necessary.
