Description
SPECIFICATION
Shopping trolley
The invention relates to a shopping trolley comprising a chassis and a bag-like container mounted thereon, wherein the chassis has a main frame which is carried by wheels and which extends substantially vertically and a support frame, provided at the lower end of the main frame, to support the bag-like container which can be secured to the main frame, wherein the bag-like container which is formed from a flexible material such as cloth or plastics sheet is internally stiffened at the bottom and at the two side walls with stiffening panels.
In one previously proposed shopping trolley of this kind, the bag-like container is stable in shape, although it is made from a flexible material, since the bottom portion and the two side walls of the bag-like container are stiffened. In conjunction with the fact that the rear wall of the container lies against the main frame of the trolley chassis, there is thus no fear of the bag-like container collapsing, in particular in the empty condition. The stiffening is provided by three stiffening panels which are foldably connected together, of which a middle stiffening panel is secured to the bottom portion of the container and side stiffening panels which are foldably connected thereto can be releasably secured to the side walls of the container. For the purposes of folding the container compactly together, the stiffening panels which are releasably fixed to the side walls of the container are released and folded is such a way that they lie flat on the stiffening panel which is secured to the bottom portion of the container. With the stiffening panels in this position, the bag-like container can be compactly folded down.
However, it has been found that this known shopping trolley suffers from the disadvantage that, when the user of the trolley is setting up the bag-like container, the side stiffening panels must be secured to the side walls of the container by press studs or the like. As this shopping trolley is used in particular by older people, this operation gives rise to difficulties.
In addition, the side stiffening panels cannot extend over the full height of the side walls of the bag-like container if the container has a height greater than its width.
Shopping trolleys have also been proposed with side stiffening panels foldably connected to the middle stiffening panel and with a second folding line, beside the folding line for forming the connection to the middle stiffening panel, the respective second folding lines beginning approximately at the first folding line and extending relative thereto at an angle of about 45 . This arrangement provides that the side stiffening panels can easily be fixed in the factory to the side portions of the container, while the second folding line makes it possible for the container to be folded down with the stiffening panels, and, in the collapsed condition of the container, the three stiffening panels extend in a plane parallel to the front and the rear of the container. However, it is not possible for a bag-like container to be folded down into a flat condition, with the bottom and the side walls being folded approximately about the longitudinal centre line.
According to the invention, there is provided a shopping trolley comprising a chassis and a bag-like container mounted thereon, wherein the chassis has a main frame which is carried by wheels and which extends substantially vertically and a support frame, provided at the lower end of the main frame, to support the bag-like container which can be secured to the main frame, wherein the bag-like container which is formed from a flexible material such as cloth or plastics sheet is internally stiffened at its bottom wall and at its two side walls with stiffening panels of which a stiffening panel provided for stiffening the container bottom wall can be moved to project upwardly within the container and the container bottom wall has a fold line which extends substantially on the transverse centre line of the container bottom wall whereby the container bottom wall can be folded into the interior of the container to allow the container to be collapsed.
With such an arrangement, to collapse the container, the container bottom wall can be easily folded together about a folding line which extends approximately in the longitudinal centre line of the container bottom. The associated stiffening plate in this arrangement is only mounted to one half of the container bottom. For the purposes of setting up the bag-like container, the folded container bottom is moved into a flat position, the stiffening panel then taking up a parallel position with respect to the container bottom and stiffening the container bottom. The free edge of the stiffening panel bears with friction against the inside of the side wall connected to the bottom of the container, so that the stiffening panel is held in its operative position.
The stiffening panels which are provided for stiffening the two side walls of the container can also be respectively folded into the interior of the container with one half of the side wall which is divided into two halves by a folding edge which extends substantially on the longitudinal centre line of the respective side wall and which can be folded into the interior of the container. This arrangement provides that the lateral side walls of the baglike container, just like the bottom thereof, can be easily stiffened be the stiffening panels which are mounted in such a way that they cannot be lost.
The stiffening panels can be connected to the regions on the halves of the container bottom and the side walls respectively of the container, which can be folded therewith into the interior of the container. In this way the stiffening panels are easily mounted to the walls of the container, without, detrimentally affecting the operation of folding the container together. The stiffening panels can also be mounted to the front wall and the rear wall respectively of the container, with a respective fixing strip which is formed by way of a folding edge on one of the two longitudinal edges of the stiffening panels.
The fixing of the stiffening panel associated with the container bottom can advantageously be arranged at the opposite side to the fixings of the stiffening panels which are associated with the side walls. This arrangement provides that the individual stiffening panels are arranged in displaced positions relative to each other so that, when the bag-like container is folded together and when the container is set up, the stiffening panels can be moved into the folded or operative position respectively from opposite sides, and thus so not impede each other.
The stiffening panels can be secured by rivets. This provides for an easy manner of fixing the stiffening panels.
The rivets for holding the stiffening panel which is provided on the inside of the container bottom may have heads to serve as support feet, on their underside. The rivets required thus also serve as support feet for standing up the bag-like container.
The stiffening panels provided on the insides of the two side walls of the container can each be fitted with their lower and their upper end respectively into internal receiving means of the associated side wall. This arrangement provides that the stiffening panels of the side walls are mounted removably and can be removed from the side walls for folding the bag-like container together and be refixed to the side walls for erecting the bag-like container.
The receiving means which cooperates with the upper end of the stiffening panel can be formed by the end of the piece of material which forms the side wall of the bag-like container, said end being folded over inwardly and being held by the side seams. In this way, the folded-over end of the portion of material which forms the side wall of the baglike container, which end is present in any case, is utilised to form the receiving means.
The receiving means which cooperates with the lower end of the stiffening panel may be formed by an internally disposed strap portion which is held by the side seams. When the bag-like container is being sewn, this strap portion of material is mounted on the inside of the side wall and thus forms an inexpensive receiving means for receiving the lower end of the stiffening panel.
The stiffening panel provided for stiffening the container bottom may be hinged by way of a folding edge to the lower edge of one of the two stiffening panels for the side walls and, for the purposes of folding the bag-like container together, can be folded against the inside of the stiffening panel for the side wall and in the operative position can lie against the container bottom. This arrangement provides that the operations of setting up and folding down the bag-like container are easily facilitated, as, for the purposes of folding down the bag-like container, firstly the stiffening panel which is provided for the container bottom is folded up so that it lies against the inside of one stiffening panel of the side walls. The stiffening panels for the side walls can then be moved into their folded position so that the bag-like container can be easily folded down. For the purposes of erecting the bag-like container, the stiffening panels for the side walls are firstly to be moved into their operative position. Then, the stiffening panel for the bottom, which lies against the inside of the one stiffening panel, can be folded downwardly so that it lies against the bottom of the container.
The two stiffening panels for the side walls can be connected to the regions on the halves of the side walls of the container, which can be folded therewith into the interior of the container. This arrangement provides that the stiffening panels are easily mounted to the walls of the container, without detrimentally affecting the operation of folding the container together.
The two stiffening panels for the side walls may be mounted to the front wall and the rear wall respectively of the bag-like container, by a respective fixing strip which is formed by way of a folding edge on one of the two longitudinal edges of the stiffening panels.
This arrangement can easily provide for securing the stiffening panels for the two side walls.
The two stiffening panels for the side walls can be secured by rivets. This easily permits fixing of the stiffening panels.
The stiffening panel provided for stiffening the container bottom may comprise two parts, wherein the side parts are hinged by way of a respective folding edge to the lower edges of the two stiffening panels for the side walls.
This arrangement provides in a simple manner that a respective part of the stiffening panel for the container bottom is hinged by way of a folding edge to each of the two stiffening panels for the side walls.

Figure 14 shows a view in section similar to
Fig. 1 3 but of a sixth embodiment of a container of a shopping trolley according to the invention.
A shopping trolley 10 shown in Figs. 1 to 5 comprises a chassis 11 with a bag-like container 1 2 mounted thereto. The chassis 11 has a main frame 14 which is carried by wheels 1 3 and which extends substantially vertically, and a support frame 15, provided at the lower end of the main frame 14, to support the bag-like container 1 2 which is secured to the main frame 1 4.
The container 1 2 is made from a flexible material such as cloth or plastics sheet, and has a substantially rectangular bottom portion 16, two side walls 17, a front wall 18 and a rear wall 1 9. The upper end of the bag-like container 1 2 can be closed with a zip fastener and in this region has carrying handles in the form of loops 20.
The bag-like container lies with its substantially rectangular bottom portion 16, on the support frame 1 5 of the chassis 11. In addition, the bag-like container 1 2 lies with its rear wall 1 9 against the main frame 14 of the chassis 11. The bag-like container 1 2 is provided with a fixing strap (not shown) which passes around the main frame 14 of the chassis 11. As the container 1 2 is lowered onto the chassis 11, the main frame 1 4 is inserted between the rear wall 1 9 of the container 1 2 and the fixing strap so that the bag-like container 1 2 is reliably secured to the chassis 11.
The bag-like container 1 2 shown in Figs. 2 to 5 has three stiffening panels 21, 22 and 23 therewithin. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 to 5, the stiffening panel 22 corresponds to the size of the bottom portion 1 6 of the container 1 2 and is secured to the bottom portion 1 6 of the container 1 2 by rivets 24.
As can be particularly clearly seen from Figs 2 and 3, the stiffening panel 22 is mounted to the container bottom portion 1 6 only by means of a transverse edge region so that the bottom portion can be folded approximately along its transverse centre, when the bag-like container 1 2 is collapsed. A partly folded position is shown in Fig. 3. For the purpose of erecting the bag-like container, the flexible bottom portion 1 6 is moved into one plane so that the stiffening panel 21 then extends parallel to the bottom portion 1 6 and stiffens the bottom portion. The fixing of the stiffening panel 21 to the flexible bottom portion 16, which could if desired be effected by sewing or adhesive, is thus provided on only one half of the bottom portion 16, which bottom portion is effectively divided into two halves by the folding edge which extends substantially centrally thereacross. In the erected position of the container, the free transverse edge of the stiffening panel bears forcibly against the front wall 18 or the rear wall 1 9 and thus prevents the stiffening panel 21 from undesirably folding back.
The rivets 24 for mounting the stiffening panel 21 may have on their undersides heads 25 which can be used as support feet.
The stiffening panels 22 and 23 which are provided on the insides of the two side walls 1 7 of the container 1 2 are also mounted by means of a longitudinal edge region to the associated side wall 17. Fixing in this case is also effected by means of rivets 24. Fig. 5 shows the bag-like container 1 2 in the course of being folded together, in which the side walls are each folded along their longitudinal centre line. Fig. 4 shows the contition of the container in which it has been erected to that the reinforcing panels 22 and 23 extend parallel to and stiffen the respective side walls 1 7. Instead of being secured by rivets 24, the stiffening panels 22 and 23 could is desired be caught by the seams which connect the side walls 1 7 to the front wall 1 8 or the rear wall 1 9 of the container 1 2.
In the second embodiment shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the stiffening panel 21 for the bottom portion is formed and secured in the same manner as in the first embodiment. The stiffening panels 22 and 23 for the side walls 1 7 are loosely associated with the container 1 2 and in their operative position engage with their lower and their upper ends respectively into receiving means 26 and 27 on the insides of the associated side walls 1 7. The receiving means 26 which cooperates with the upper end of the stiffening panel 22 and 23 respectively is formed by the end 29 of the portion of material which forms the side wall 1 7 of the bag-like container 12, said end being folded over inwardly and engaged by side seams 28 to form a pocket. This arrangement provides that the upper end which will be folded over in any case is utilised to form the receiving means. The receiving means 27 which cooperates with the lower end of the stiffening panel 22 or 23 respectively is formed by a strap portion 30 of material, which is provided on the inner face of the side wall 1 7 and which is caught by the side seams 28. To erect the bag-like container 1 2 therefore, the stiffening panel 21 is firstly arranged so that its bottom edge extends parallel to the whole of the bottom portion 1 6 and the lower end of the stiffening panel 22 or 23 then being introduced into the lower receiving means 27.By slightly bending the stiffening panel 22 or 23, the upper end can then be inserted into the upper receiving means 26 so that the bag-like container 1 2 is of a stable form.
In the third embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the stiffening panel 21, 22 or 23 is mounted by means of a fixing strip 31 to the front wall 1 8 or the rear wall 1 9 respectively of the container 12, the fixing strip 31 being formed by a folded edge 32 on one of the two longitudinal edges of each of the side stiffening panels 22, 23 and by one of the two transverse edges of the bottom stiffening panel 21.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the bottom stiffening panel 21 corresponds to the size of the bottom portion 1 6 of the container 12, while the side stiffening panels 22 and 23 correspond to the size of the side walls 1 7 of the container 1 2. The stiffening panel 22 is only mounted to the side wall 1 7 by way of a longitudinal edge region so that, when the bag-like container 1 2 is folded down into a collapsed condition, the side wall 1 7 can be folded approximately along its longitudinal centre. This folded position is shown in Fig. 11.For the purposes of opening up the bag-like container, the flexible side wall 1 7 is moved into one plane so that the stiffening panel 22 then extends parallel to the side wall 1 7 and stiffens the side wall.
The stiffening panel 22 is secured to the flexible side wall 1 7 by means of rivets 24.
However, fixing could if desired be effected by sewing or adhesive. The stiffening panel 22 is thus provided on the one half of the side wall 17, which is effectively divided into two halves by the substantially centrally extending folding line. In the erected condition of the container, the free edge of the stiffening panel lies forcibly against the front wall 1 8 or the rear wall 1 9 respectively and thus prevents the stiffening panel 22 from undesirably folding back. Instead of using rivets 24, the stiffening panels 22 and 23 can also be engaged by the seams 28 which connect the side walls 1 7 to the front wall 1 8 and the rear wall 1 9 respectively of the container 1 2.
As can be seen in particular from Fig. 13, the stiffening panel 21 which is provided for stiffening the container bottom 1 6 is hinged to the lower edge of the stiffening panel 22 by way of a fold 33. For the purposes of folding the bag-like container 1 2 into a collapsed condition, the stiffening panel 21 can be folded against the inside of the stiffening panel 22 for the side wall 1 7. In the erected position, the stiffening panel 21 lies against the container bottom 16.This arrangement facilitates the operation of opening up and folding down the container 1 3. To erect the container 12, the stiffening panels 22 and 23 are firstly moved into their operative positions so that they extend perpendicularly with respect to the front wall 18, the rear wall 1 9 and the bottom portion 1 6. The stiffening panel 21 is then folded downwardly until it lies against the bottom wall 16. For the purposes of folding the container 1 2 down into a collapsed condition, the stiffening panel 21 is first folded upwardly until it lies against the inside of the stiffening panel 22. The stiffening panels 22 and 23 can then be moved into their inoperative positions with the side walls 1 7 being folded together about their longitudinal centre line. The stiffening panel 23 is secured to the side wall 1 7 in the same manner as the stiffening panel 22 but the stiffening panel 23 does not have hinged thereto a stiffening panel 21 for the bottom wall 16.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 13, the side stiffening panels 22 and 23 are mounted by means of a fixing strip 31 to the front wall 1 8 and the rear wall 1 9 respectively of the container 12, the fixing strip 31 being formed on one of the two longitudinal edges of the stiffening panels 22 and 23, by way of a folding edge 32.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 14, both the stiffening panel 22 and the stiffening panel 23 each have a respective part of the bottom stiffening panel 21 at their lower edges, the two parts of the panel 21 together stiffen the container bottom wall 16.
