Abstract
Luminescent materials which are red-luminescing rare earth metal manganese aluminates having a magneto-plumbite crystal structure, which is activated by europium and bivalent manganese or by cerium and bivalent manganese, and has a composition defined by one of the following formulae:- (a) [La0.92(1-x)EuxO0.08(1-x)] Mg1-yMnyAl11.13+0.2xO19 <IMAGE> (c) [La0.92(1-p)Ce0.92pO0.08] Mg1-yMnyAl11.13O0.19 (d) [La0.86(1-p)Ce0.86pO0.14]MnyAl11.90-0.67yO19 (e) linear combinations of (a) and (b) (f) linear combinations of (c) and (d), wherein 0.01 </= x </= 0.30 0.1 </= p </= 1.0 and 0.5 </= y </= 0.9. These luminescent materials are used in luminescent screens of low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamps used to promote the growth of plants, on account of the emission by these materials of radiation in the deep red part of the spectrum. The materials may be used together with a blue-luminescing material e.g. a barium magnesium aluminate activated by europium.
