Abstract
A strain or displacement gauge has two blocks between which movement is measured; a fibre optic light path 2 is provided into the gauge and another fibre optic light path 4 is provided out of the gauge. The change in intensity of light transmitted along the path is a measure of movement between the blocks. A light source 1 supplies light to the gauge along path 2 and an optical detector 3 detects the light received along path 4. A light path can be provided in each block with the paths aligned with each other and movement between the blocks causes misalignment between the paths. Alternatively a shutter or attenuator or a device having markings (for digital measurement) can be interposed in the light path by an amount depending on the movement between the blocks. Sets of fibres may be used to give a vernier effect, and two dimensional measuring is possible. If each block carries a grating, Moiré fringes may be used to measure the movement. If the movement is arranged to rotate the polarisation of the light, this may be used to measure the movement. <IMAGE>
