Abstract

A process for the preparation of 2 -(3-benzoylphenyl)-propionic acid comprises treating 3- propionylbenzophenone with a thallium (III) salt in a suitable solvent, thereby to produce an intermediate ester which is hydrolyzed to produce the desired 2-(3-benzoylphenyl) propionic acid. In a particular mode of carrying out the process of the invention the thallium (III) salt may be bound to a suitable carrier, such as an acidic montmorillonite earth.
