Abstract

In order to prevent erosion of the refractory lining of a vertical shaft furnace 2 when introducing at least one jet of oxygen into the furnace 2 through a main air tuyere 10 during metal melting, the oxygen is injected into the furnace 2 at supersonic velocity through at least one Laval nozzle 28 positioned coaxially within its main air tuyere 10. The jet of oxygen passes into the combustion region of the furnace remote from the refractory lining of the furnace.
