Abstract
A method of sinking shafts is described in which a narrow diameter shaft is first drilled to within a required verticality limit and is thereafter lined with a guide tube 1 which is secured in relation to the ground, and a large diameter, annular frustoconical drill bit 2 is rotated about the guide tube 1 which constitutes a prepared axis for the drill bit 2. Drilling apparatus is also disclosed comprising the said drill bit 2, means 6, 8 for rotating it about the guide tube and means 15 for lowering the bit. The cuttings which arise during drilling can be removed through the guide tube 1 if it is formed with holes or slots thereby falling to the bottom of the tube whence they can be removed, or the cuttings can be removed upwardly, preferably in the form of a slurry in water or drilling fluid using an air lift system and/or pump means. The invention is particularly suitable for accurately sinking into the underground workings shafts of sufficiently large diameter to accommodate cages for transporting men and materials. <IMAGE>
