Abstract

Power losses are reduced during operation of a work fluid system, such as an hydrostatic transmission (14), provided with a control fluid system for controlling the operation of the work fluid system. A modulatable relief valve (79) establishes a control fluid pressure and is automatically adjustable to reduce the control fluid pressure during periods when the working fluid pressure in the work fluid system is itself at less than the maximum level due to load variations on the work fluid system or other causes. This reduces the volume of fluid which is discharged through the valve over a period of time but does not interfere with operation of the systems since the control fluid pressure demand is a function of the working fluid pressure. By reducing discharge through the control system fluid relief valve at times when a high control fluid pressure is not needed, a significant power saving is effected. <IMAGE>
