Abstract

Sulfites or bisulfites of ether amines containing hydrophobic groups are derived from amines of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R is an organic hydrophobic group, a is an integer, m, n, n', p and q are O or integers, X<1>, X<2>, X<3> and X<4> are hydrogen atoms, C1-4 alkyl groups or (R'O)yH groups, y being an integer, and R' is an ethylene, propylene or isopropylene group. The sulfites or bisulfites are reaction products of SO2 or H2SO3 with ether amines. The reaction can be carried out in water, alcohols or mixtures of these at room temperature or elevated temperature. The products are useful as corrosion inhibitors in liquid systems. They have both corrosion inhibiting properties and oxygen scavenging properties and further have a substantial bactericidal effect.
