Abstract
The present invention relates to a new process for the manufacture of phthalides of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 each is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, halogenalkyl cyanoalkyl or alkoxyalkyl, each alkyl or alkoxy radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl, benzyl or cycloalkyl with 5 or 6 ring carbon atoms, one of the R radicals of the pair bonded to the same nitrogen atom may also be hydrogen, or R1 and R2, R3 and R4 and/or R5 and R6 together with the nitrogen atom form a 5-or 6-membered heterocyclic ring X, Y and Z each is hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy with 1 to 12 carbon atoms or halogen, said process comprises oxidizing a compound of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1, R2, R3, R4, X and Y have the given meaning, to open the lactone ring and reacting the acid compound with an aniline derivative of the formula <IMAGE> in which R5, R6 and Z have the given meaning.
