Abstract

A device for displaying information and/or images in the control area of a vehicle e.g. an aircraft, comprises an image generating device (3), e.g. a C.R.T. an image display device (1) spatially separated from the image generating device (3) and an image conducting cable (2) connecting the two devices (1,3). Lenses (9,10) at each end may provide magnification. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A device for displaying information and/or images in the control area of a vehicle The invention relates to a device for displaying information and/or images in the control area of a vehicle comprising an image generating device and an image display device.
Devices are known which have a display device, arranged inside a vehicle, for displaying images or information. This device, in which the size of the screen is determined by the size of the image desired by the user, is coupled to an image generating device. Both devices generally form a single structural unit so that the location at which the image is generated is almost identical to the location at which the image is displayed. The disadvantage is that such a structural unit is voluminous and heavy. Its installation in confined controlled areas, for example in a cockpit of a single seater fighter aircraft is only possible therefore if other constructural and anthropological disadvantages are put up with.
The invention seeks to provide a device of the type stated at the outset which ensures that there is a space saving construction at the location where the image is displayed.
According to the invention there is provided a device for displaying information and/or images in the control area of a vehicle, comprising a device for generating images and a device for displaying images, wherein the image generating device is spatially separated from the image display device and an image conducting cable between the two devices for transmission of the image therebetween.
One advantage of the invention lies in the fact that when the device for displaying the image is rigidly mounted on the vehicle, and this means that there are few relative movements between the device displaying the image and a user which is an advantage, it is also possible to mount the device generating the image so that it is protected. Relative movement between these two devices is taken into account in an advantageous manner by means of a flexible image conducting cable.
The invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example, with reference to the drawing, the single figure of which shows, diagramatically, one embodiment of the invention.
A device for displaying information or images is shown in the cockpit of an aircraft. This device has an arrangement 1 for displaying the image, for example a monitor, an image conducting cable 2 and an arrangement 3 for generating the image, for example a cathode ray tube. Whereas the arrange ment (1) for displaying the image is arranged in the cockpit 4 in a pilot's line of sight, the pilot being designated 5, the arrangement for generating the image is located in a chamber 7 which is separated from the cockpit 4 by means of a partition 6. Both arrangement 1 and 3 are connected by means of the image conducting cable 2.
The arrangement 3 which generates the image and to which image information is passed by means of an external sensor, e.g. a television camera not shown in the drawings, via the cable 8, has a small and light weight tube with a relatively small screen.
The image produced may for example have 1/9 sf the size of conventional display images and is enlarged by optical means 9, which serve to couple the image conducting cable 2 with the image generating arrangement 3, the image generating arrangement 3 converts the image to a size desired by the user. Optical means 10 provided in the image display arrangement 1 and chiefly provided for the purpose of coupling the image conducting cable 2 with the image display device 1 may carry out the same function.
1. A device for displaying information and/or images in the control area of a vehicle, comprising a device for generating images and a device for displaying images, wherein the image generating device is spatially separated from the image display device and an image conducting cable between the two devices for transmission of the image therebetween.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the image produced is small in comparison to conventional display images.
3. A device according to claim 3, wherein optical means are provided for enlarging the said small image to a size desired by the user.
4. A device according to claim 3, wherein the optical means serve at the same time to couple the image conducting cable to the device for generating and/or displaying the image.
5. A device for displaying information and/or images in control area of a vehicle substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
