Abstract

A blister pack comprises a backing sheet 1 to which are secured, by heat- sealing, flanges 3 of a container 2. A top wall of the container 2 is 5 formed with an opening 6 which receives a lid portion 7 having undercut side walls 8 which provide a snap fit onto the opening 6, the entry of the lid portion 7 being limited by flanges 9. Alternatively the opening for the lid 7 can be formed in the backing sheet 1. Ribs 11 are provided in the side walls 4 of the container 2 for added rigidity. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to blister packs This invention relates to blister packs which are used to display products for sale. The blister pack conventionally comprises a backing sheet to which a moulded clear plastics container is fixed by adhesive so as to enclose the product. The backing sheet provides areas for printed description of the product and the plastics container enables the product to be viewed without the need for it to be removed. Indeed the product can only be removed by destroying the pack.
It is an object of this invention to provide blister packs which allow the product contained therein to be removed without destroying the usefulness of the blister pack.
Accordingly, from one aspect, the invention provides a blister pack mount comprising a container portion and a lid portion, the container portion having flanges for attachment to a backing sheet, side walls, and a top wall, an opening being formed within one of the walls for receipt of the lid portion, the lid portion defining a reentrant which provides a snap fit of the lid portion into the opening.
Preferably the opening is formed in the top wall of the container portion. This blister pack mount can be secured by means of the flanges on the container portion to a backing sheet to form a blister pack.
From a further aspect, the invention provides a blister pack comprising a container portion, a backing sheet, and a lid portion, the container portion having flanges attached to the backing sheet, side walls and a top wall, the base wall of the blister pack being provided by the backing sheet, an opening being formed in one of the walls for receipt of the lid portion, the lid portion defining a reentrant which provides a snap fit of the lid portion into the opening.
With such blister packs of the invention, the backing sheet can be formed from card or a transparent or opaque plastics material.
Access to the interior of the blister pack is enabled by the removable lid portion. This provides advantages in several situations. For example if the product being sold is a set of screws a number of the screws can be removed and then the pack can be resealed to retain the remaining screws safely.
Furthermore, where a product is on display, it can be removed from close scrutiny by a prospective purchaser without having to destroy the blister pack.
Furthermore this form of blister pack does not have to be formed so as to enclose the product at the same time. Thus a manufacturer can pack his own products into the preformed blister pack and so does not need to send those products out to the blister pack manufacturers for incorporation.
Ideally the reentrant is formed by projecting parts of side walls of the lid portion and by flanges at the termination of the side walls limiting inward movement of the lid portion through the opening in the container portion. In the preferred arrangement the projecting parts are provided by undercut side walls of the lid portion. However it would be possible for the projecting parts to comprise pimples, ribs orthe like on the side walls of the lid portion.
It may be advantageous to provide indentation grooves formed in the walls of the container portion to provide added rigidity. Such grooves would ideally be formed near to and parallel with corners formed by the side walls of the container portion.
The lid portion can advantageously be provided with a lifting tag.
The container portion may take a variety of shapes such as dome-shape or square, oblong or circular cross-section.
A blister pack or a mount therefor in accordance with this invention may have at least some of the parts produced by vacuum forming, injection moulding or stamping. The container portion and/or the lid portion may be formed from a transparent or opaque plastics material.
The invention may be performed in various ways and preferred embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through a blister pack constucted in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the blister pack with the lid removed; Figure 3 is an underneath plan view of the lid of the blister pack, Figure 4 is a horizontal cross-section on line IV-IV of Figure 1; Figure 5 illustrates a modified form of lid for the blister pack; and Figure 6 is a cross-section through a modified form of blister pack of the invention.
The blister pack illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 comprises a backing sheet 1 on which has been heat-sealed a blister pack mount 2 by means of flanges 3 leading from side walls 4 of a container portion of the blister pack mount. A top wall 5 of the container portion has an opening 6 carefully cut therein (after vacuum forming of the container from a clear plastics sheet) which receives a vacuum formed lid portion 7 formed from the same material.
The lid 7 has undercut side walls 8 which create a snap fit of the lid portion 7 within the container portion 2, the extent of entry of the lid portion being limited by flanges 9 at the termination of the side walls 8. A tag 10 is provided (if necessary) as an easy means of pulling off the lid portion 7 from the container portion 2. Near the corners formed by the walls 4 of the container portion 2 ribs 11 are formed to provide added rigidity and thus ensure that the lid portion 7 cannot be removed without the application of an appreciable effort.
The blister pack shown in Figures 1 to 4 can be used to carry a variety of articles to be sold, the backing sheet having an area 12 for the incorporation of artwork or printed matter and a hanging slot 13. The lid portion 7 can be pulled off to provide access to the interior of the container portion 2 so that the products within the blister pack may be removed and, if desired, replaced and retained by reintroduction of the lid portion 7. The tight fit of the lid portion 7 within the opening 6 of the container portion 2 ensures that the products will be safely retained within the blister pack under all but the most extreme circumstances.
Instead of forming the side walls 8 of the lid portion 7 as undercut side walls, projecting parts in the form of pimples 14 on the side walls 8 could be provided as illustrated in Figure 5. These pimples could be extended to form complete ribs extending along each side wall 8 and the ribs or pimples would lock underneath the top wall 5 of the container portion 2 when the lid portion is inserted through the opening 6.
Apart fro the oblong cross-sectional shape shown for the blister pack mount in Figure 2, various other shapes are possible to suit the particular products to be carried by the blister pack. Furthermore the walls of the container portion do not have to be flat so that the whole blister pack mount could, for example, be dome-shaped. It would also be possible to provide an opening for the lid portion in a side wall of the container portion if desired.
The blister pack shown in Figure 6 comprises a backing sheet 1A having an area 12A for incorpora- tion of artwork, printed matter or a hanging slot, in combination with a container portion 2A of a transparent plastics material which has been heat sealed to the backing sheet 1A by means of flanges 3A leading from the side walls 4A of the container portion. An opening 6A cut into the backing sheet 1A receives a lid portion 7A having undercut side walls 8A which create a snap fit within the opening 6A.
Flanges 9A limit the extent of entry of the lid portion 7A into the interior of the blister pack. The lid portion 7A may be provided with a lifting tag, if desired, and can be formed from a plastics material or from a flexible card for example.
