Abstract
191,826. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Andrews, H. H. Oct. 18, 1921. Electric and magnetic.-Electric current for actuating track brakes is supplied by generators driven by the wheels of the vehicles, and is kept approximately constant by an automatic regulator acting to vary resistance in both the field and the armature circuit of the generator. The invention is described in connection with an electrically propelled vehicle, in which a driving motor 1 is utilized as a braking-generator. The regulator 27 shown in developed form in the Figure, is actuated against a spring 7 by a solenoid 20 in series with the motor armature 1 and the brake magnet 6. Increase of current moves the regulator contacts 26 to the left, increasing the armature resistance 5, and diminishing resistance 3 in parallel with the field 2. A safety-resistance 8 controlled by additional contacts 16 on the regulator 27 is inserted in the braking circuit automatically in case the transition is made when the motors are running at high speed. A solenoid 13 opposing the solenoid 20 may be switched in when greater braking current is required for emergencies. The whole arrangement is controlled by two additional contacts A, B on the master controller C and an electromagnetic braking switch D.
