Abstract

16,210. Facton, H. A. Nov. 17. Projectiles ; projectile fuses.-Consists in a projectile adapted to be dropped from a height, comprising a main body portion a, a thick-walled sleeve b enclosing the main part a and connected thereto by means which yield on impact, an explosive charge within the sleeve at the rear (,f f the main portion a, and a striker g fixed at the inner end of the sleeve. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the explosive charge k and percussion cap f are contained in a casing e which is fixed to the rear of the part a. When the projectile strikes an obstacle, the sleeve b which is connected to the body a by a blade spring c or other yielding connexion, moves forward relatively to the part a, and the firing-pin g explodes the charge k, which expels the body a from the sleeve. The body a of the projectile may be hollow and may contain an incendiary charge. The explosive charge may, in this case, be merely a fulminate cap. Preferably, an arrow-like tail (not shown) is provided at the rear of the sleeve b, and the body a may have a separate pointed nose. The main part a may, in a further modification, be formed as an explosive shell, with or without a delay-action fuse. It is also stated, in the Provisional Specification, that the projectile may be fired from a gun.
