Abstract
2454. Fairweather, W. C., [Lake Torpedo Boat Co.]. Feb. 16. Submarine vessels; stokeholds. - In order that submarine vessels having steam-engines for surface propulsion may be promptly submerged, the boilers are situated in a compartment 5 surrounded by a water jacket, which prevents heat from radiating to other parts of the vessels. When the vessel has finished surface operations, the fires are drawn and the stokehold abandoned, and the doors on the exits 13 are closed. The vessel is fitted with means for circulating the water in the jacket 4, ventilating the stokehold, and providing forced draught for the boilers. A passage 37 under the stokehold allows access between the fore and after sections of the vessel.
