Abstract
2000. Whitney, F. B. Feb. 8. Submarine vessels. - For the purpose of increasing the stability of submarine vessels, the central portion of the cylindrical hull is provided with an exterior portion 8 adapted to act as ballast tanks. and the engines and dynamos are located upon the keel plate. The increased beam also ensures a decreased draught, enabling the boats to be used in shallow waters. A central compartment is provided for the engines 26 and dynamos 27, of which there are two sets arranged in tandem and adapted to charge accumulators or to supply current to the electric motors 47 which drive the propellers 46. The machinery is bolted directly on to the keel plate of the inner hull, which is supported by a keelson between the inner and outer hulls.
