Venturi and Pitot-tube apparatus.-Relates to speed and distance indicators for ships, of the kind in which a Venturi or Pitot-tube device actuates a bellows. The two pressure tubes are connected to the bellows A, B, Fig. 1, the end: C, D of which are connected by a rod E, th( movement being controlled by a spring F. The movements of the rack H, actuated by the lever G, are therefore proportional to the square of the speed of the ship. The pinion I carries a cam K, the equation of the contour of which is r = ro Œ k ##, so that the vertical movements of the rod M are proportional to the speed. The rod M is guided in a frame 0, Fig. 2, and carries the friction roller R which is rotated by the shaft P, but is longitudinally movable upon it. The position of this roller relatively to the cone S determines its speed of rotation, the cone being continuously driven by a shaft T and clock-work U. The counter X thus indicates the distance run. The movements of the rod M may be transmitted to the pointer A<1> to indicate the speed, and may be recorded upon a clock-driven drum. To adjust the stroke of the rack H, the fulcrum Y of the lever G may he adjusted by the nut Z.
