Abstract
15,077. Kirkley, H. D. June 30. Steps of the kind in which an extension comprising a tread-board and a rise-board hinged together is adapted to be folded beneath the lowermost fixed tread-board. The leaves 13 of the hinges which connect the rise-board 9 to the treadboard 8 are secured in recesses in the rear of the board 9, and are mounted by eyes 17 on a transverse rod 4 carried in bearings in the side walls 3 of the fixed steps. Upwardly and rearwardly curved spring arms 18 secured to the tread-board 8 are pivoted at 23 to the arms 22 of a rock-shaft 21 mounted in bearings in the walls 3. The shaft 21 is operated through a crankarm 27 and a link 30 from an adjustable handlever 32 pivoted to the wall 3 to fold or extend the boards 8, 9. In the folded position, Fig. 3, the pivots 23 are above the plane containing the rod 4 and the shaft 21, and the spring action of the arms 18 assists to hold the parts against unfolding.
