Abstract
25,574. Wetmore, E. P. Nov. 7. Affixing by adhesives.-Relates to apparatus for making bottle caps or seals and particularly to the means for cementing within the caps the cork disk and paraffin or resinous paper used as a lining, the cementing being effected by heating and cooling under pressure of the assembled caps; or the pressure may be applied during heating only. After the metal caps, paper linings, and cork disks have been assembled, the complete caps pass down a shoot 11, Figs. 3 and 5, and enter cap seats 20, Fig. 6, formed in the flange 19 of a cementing-wheel revolving in a vertical plane on a shaft 12, the seats opening laterally to a face of the wheel. The caps are guided to their seats by a spring arm 31, Fig. 5, and are supported in an inverted position under the pressure of radial spring plungers 24, Figs. 3 and 6, by ledges engaging their extreme outer edges only, thus leaving the main top portion of each cap exposed to the heating and cooling means. While held under pressure of the plungers, the caps, during the rotation of the wheel are first heated by means of a perforated pipe 34 and a Bunsen burner 35 and then cooled by a pipe 35 connected to an air blower. In the pipe 35 are two series of holes at right-angles so as to cool all parts of the caps. Finally the caps are automatically discharged by a fixed arm 33 into a shoot 32. During the feeding and discharge of the caps the plungers 24 are retracted by a cam 29
