Gearing for stopping and starting machinery. -The stopping and starting mechanism of a single-revolution cutting-out press includes a safety device to ensure that more than one pressing movement cannot occur for each actuation of the treadle. The main shaft B is driven by a pulley and clutch controlled by a rod D<3> connected to an arm E' secured on a rock - shaft E, which carries loosely spring- pressed arms E<2> of the controlling-treadle E<3>. When the treadle is depressed, the lower end F' of a spring-pressed detent lever F pivoted to an extension E<4> of one of the treadle arms actuates a spring-pressed lever G rigidly secured to the shaft E, causing the shaft to move the rod D<3> to throw the driving-clutch into gear. When the shaft B has made one revolution a cam B<1> carried by it engages the upper and enlarged end F<2> of the detent lever, to separate the lower end F' from engagement with the lever G, which is then moved by its spring G<2> to rock the shaft E back again to disconnect the main clutch. At the same time, the rear portion of a two-part adjustable lever J secured to the shaft E engages an adjusting-screw H<2> on the end of a pivoted brake member H, which is forced into engagement with a brake drum B<2>, while the forward end J' of the lever is moved into a position to be engaged by a stop face B<3> on the drum B<2>, to prevent the shaft B from running beyond its stopping position. The brake member H and the arm J are withdrawn when the shaft E is rocked to throw the main clutch into gear.
