Abstract

5691. Schiementz, P. O. March 7. Tapping.-In a nut-tapping machine the tap spindle carries a block moving longitudinally therewith and operating on the one hand a rocking lever for controlling the blank-distributing mechanism and a pawl lever for advancing the blank carrier, and on the other hand the camping-means and the stop for allowing the discharge of the work. The threaded tap spindle 1 is rotated alternately in opposite directions by belts on pulleys 6, 7 loosely mounted on a shaft 9<1>, through gearing 21, 22. The pulleys are connected to the shaft 9<1> by a coupling-disk 8, pinned to the rod 9, which is moved axially by levers 11, 13 through a sleeve 16 which is moved in opposite directions by the abutment 19, on the spindle 1 and by a collar a secured by a pin 20 and elongated slot to the spindle and is held in either position by a bevelled spring pin 18 engaging the bevelled end of the lever 11. A block 33 mounted on the tap spindle, during the rearward motion engages a ratchet lever 32 pivoted at 31, which operates a ratchet wheel 29 so as to rotate the shaft 24 carrying the pulley 25 and consequently the belt 27 which carries the blanks. In this motion also a link 43 connected to the lever 32 and also the lever 38, raises a pin 40 so as to allow a blank to enter the feed trough. On the forward motion of the tap, the lever 32 is drawn by a spring 34 against the screw stop 35 and raises the pin 41 to allow the blank to fall down the shoot, and at the same time lowers the pin 40 against the admission of a second blank. In this motion of the tap an abutment 49 from a rail 48 to which the block 33 is attached oscillates an arm 50 on a spindle carrying a second arm 51, which thereupon moves a wedge 47 to close the resilient jaw 44 of a clamp on the blanks. The rail also carries a vertically adjustable stop 54 on which the previously threaded nut 60 rests and the blank to be threaded is clamped against a steel facing 52 on the fixed jaw and rests on this nut. When the tap enters the blank the stop 54 moves from under the nut 60, which thus drops out and a new blank then drops on to the blank being tapped. On the return motion of the tap, the clamping-jaw is released, and on the removal of the tap the finished nut and the next blank fall down the shoot against the stop 54. The spindle 1 may have a tap at its other end and a second blank-feeding &c. mechanism, and the troughs may be closed by strong counteracting plates 55 at one side to avoid breakages and thin yielding sheets 56 at the other side.
