Abstract

Ice-making, drum apparatus for; freezing by direct contact of cold air.-Brine &c. passes in contact with metal plates on one side thereof; on the other side ice is formed and cold air is passed over the surface of the ice as the plates are alternately immersed in water and exposed to the cold air. In the apparatus shown, the brine is passed from the hollow axle E through the hollow walls of a rotating drum A. The brine may also flow through hollow partitions B. Cold air is admitted at S, and, after passing over the ice surfaces, leaves the chamber by the outlets T. The drum dips into a water-tank U in the bottom of the chamber. This tank is connected to a second tank in which the waterlevel is adjusted so that the water in the tank U reaches the drum C. This second tank may contain a cooling-coil for the water to be frozen. The water in the tank U is kept above freezing- point by the circulation of warm water, or water to be frozen, in a jacket surrounding the tank, or by attemperating-coils. The surface of the water may be agitated by stirring-mechanism or by spray-pipes. To ensure the formation of ice only on those surfaces upon which it is intended that ice should be formed, all other surfaces are insulated by means of timber saturated in oil or paraffin wax; or the surfaces are covered with granulated compressed cork slabs. The drum may be rotated continuously or intermittently, or it may be oscillated. A cutter L driven from the shaft A, which drives the drum through ratchet gear G, trims the ice blocks. In a modification, the water to be frozen is carried inside a drum having hollow walls. As the blocks are formed, they are released by the passage of warm brine through the bottom walls, and fall on to a slide arranged within the drum.
