Abstract

21,556. Hill, C. D., and Baquie, H. C. Sept. 21. Spring wheels with continuous outer rigid ring and pneumatic cushions.-Relates to wheels in which the ends of spokes secured to the hub are fitted with pistons which slide against air pressure in cylinders secured to the rim. Each radial spoke 4, Fig. 1, is fitted with a flat head 5, Fig. 2, to which is secured a cup-leather 6 facing the rim so that, in operation, air passes the piston on its outward stroke, but not on its inward compression-stroke. The end of each cylinder is formed with two lugs 8 which slide on tangential bars 9 secured to the rim. Ball bearings may be interposed between the bars and lugs. In a modification, each spoke is bifurcated so that the adjacent cylinders of two twin spokes are parallel, and slide on a common bar. The cup-leather with its valve action may be dispensed with, and a solid piston used which operates in conjunction with an aperture in the side of the cylinder.
