Abstract

1175. Childs, J. G., and Hill, T. S. Jan. 16. Regulating.-For controlling the position and operation of a wind-mill with respect to the direction and velocity of the wind, two or more separate vanes are provided at least one of which is pivoted on a horizontal axis. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, three vanes d, e, f are used for controlling the wheel a, the shaft b of which is mounted eccentrically of the post c. The vanes are mounted on a frame made up of members g, h, the vane e being fixed and the vanes d, f mounted on horizontal shafts k, m interconnected by bevel segments n, o. The vanes are not pivoted centrally, the shaft being nearer the top of the vane d and the bottom of the vane f, and the vanes are kept normally vertical by a counterweight q adjustable on a crank r attached to the shaft m, by springs or by their own weight. Means are also provided for rotating the vanes from the base of the tower. The vanes hanging vertically bring the wheel into the wind, but, if the wind increases so that the wheel gives more power than required, the pivoted vanes tilt and the wheel becomes governed to a greater extent by the vane e, which, acting alone, will bring the wheel out of the wind. The vane f may be centrally pivoted or may be omitted, and the vane e may be pivoted and connected to the vane d so that they always move at right-angles. The vanes d, e are arranged to counterbalance one another and the torque resulting from the eccentric mounting, or the reaction of the vertical power shaft. The vanes, instead of being built in one piece, may consist of a frame s mounted on a hollow shaft t and carrying slats u pivoted unsymmetrically thereto and controlled by cranks v joined to a rod w operated through a crank x on a rod y passing through the shaft t. Two small vanes projecting at angles of about 20 degrees on each side of the plane of the wheel would then be sufficient
