Abstract
23,090. Kimberley, F. A., and James Cycle Co. Oct. 30. Driving-mechanism.-An epicyclic three-speed gear of the one-train type is operated by sets of transverse bolts displaced by concentric rings and wedge devices. In a cycle hub gear shown in Fig. 1, the driving- sleeve A is connected through a ratchet clutch c<1> with the internally-toothed ring C. The planet-pinions d are carried by a plate D connected through a ratchet clutch d<1> to a ring B<1> screwed into the hub shell B. The sun-pinion e is secured to a plate E, which carries on its inner face a pivoted lever e<2>, Fig. 3, and on its outer face projections e', Fig. 4, with a gap between them. Spring-returned bolts G when thrust to the left by a ring g are capable of coupling the plate D to the sleeve A. Like bolts F when operated by a ring f can couple the ring B<1> to the ring C. A projection from the lever e<2> extending through the plate E can be engaged by a sliding plunger I. A wedge surface f<1> on a further extension e<3> of the lever e<2> is adapted to engage and operate the ring f. A wedge surface g' on the lever e' can similarly operate the ring g. A projection e<4>, Fig. 3, on the lever e<2> normally engages teeth a<2> on the plate D, locking the parts together for a solid drive. The plunger I on being depressed strikes the lever e<2> and enters the gap between the projections e'. The pinion e is thus freed from the ring B<1> and held against rotation. The ratchet clutches c<1>, d' then automatically engage and produce the reduced or power drive. Further depression of the plunger I brings the sets of plungers G, F into action by means of the wedges g', f<1> and the rings g, f. This effects the high-speed drive, the clutches c', d' overrunning.
