Abstract
9413. Lancheater, F. W. April 23. Aerial machines without aerostats; aeroplanes launching and landing; propelling; steering.-In aerial machines or aerodromes of the type described in Specification No. 3608, A.D. 1897, the main aeroplane A is formed of a number of triangular frames A', Fig. 6, carrying longitudinal members A', A<5>, A<6> at the angles, and the two members A<4>, A<5> are roofed over to form the supporting-surface. The lower member A<6> is of wing-like section and forms an auxiliary supporting surface. The frames A', Fig. 1, are braced by wires a, and the ends A<7>, A<8> of the plane are bent upwards to improve the stability. A twelve-cylinder motor B drives two co-axial screw propellers in opposite directions. Vertical fin surfaces A<8>, Fig. 2, are provided above the plane A, and an horizontal tail E is supported by rods A<11>, A<12> behind the propellers. The tail E may be provided with lateral extensions EE and vertical planes E', and the planes may be adjusted by guys E<1>, E<3> and fixed in the desired position. A wedge-shaped plane C<2>, Fig. 3, is fixed to the steering-pillar C' and is operated by a lever F<2> to steer the machine. Wheels D', D<2>, D<3>, pivotally mounted so as to swivel, are provided for travelling on land when starting or alighting, and outlying caster - wheels may be provided to prevent the machine from overturning. The hand-wheel J for steering the machine is connected to the sun element H<1>, Fig. 4, of an epicyclic train, while the front road wheel D' is connected to the planet element H<2>. The ring element H<3> is connected by ropes H<4> to the rear wheels D<2>, D<3>; when the sun element is fixed, any movement of the front wheel D<1> is communicated to the rear wheels to maintain them parallel and to allow the machine to steer a straight course. If the sun element H<1> is turned by the hand-wheel, the front and rear wheels are turned through unequal angles, so that the course of the machine is altered. A hand-lever K<2>, Fig. 2, carrying a toothed segment K<1> gearing with a rack carried by the wheel D' enables the aeronaut to tilt the machine in order to rise into the air and to diminish the shock of landing. Rubber buffers K<3> are also provided.
