Abstract

21,475. Blake, J. T. Oct. 23. Lifts. - Relates to safety devices for opening the landing doors of lifts only when the cage is opposite them, and for locking the cage in position while the door is open. The essential feature consists in a locking-bar arranged in the gateway of each of the landings and operated from the cage. The sliding, doors 2, in the form shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, carry rings 5 which slide on an horizontal locking bar or shaft 1 and have teeth 6 adapted to be locked by a central annular groove 4 in the shaft 1 and to slide, when the shaft is rotated into the unlocked position, along a groove 3. The shaft is rotated by bevel-gearing from a vertical spindle carrying a forked arm 11, in which a projection 12 on a vertical shaft 13 carried by the cage is adapted to engage when opposite the door. A handle 16 in the cage rotates the shaft 13 and at the same time turns the arms 14 into engagement with stops 15 on the lift enclosure to prevent motion of the cage while the doors are open. Springs 10 keep the fork 11 in a central position. In a modification, the grooved locking- shaft 25, Figs. 7 and 8, is rotated by an arm 24 engaging a sliding plate 23 mounted on the side of the enclosure and having a projection 22 which is engaged by an arm 21 on a vertical shaft 18 carried by the lift. On this shaft is mounted a cover 19 for the handing rope, which cannot be used till the door is locked, which is effected by a second arm 30 on the shaft 18 replacing the slide 23. To prevent the slide from being operated in the absence of the cage, a stop 32 carried by a spring-actuated lever 31 engages a hole 33 in the lift framework so as to lock the plate, the other end of the lever 31 being adapted to be engaged by the horn 21 so as to free the plate 23. When the doors are hinged as shown in Figs. 12 and 14, the locking-shaft 40 is reduced opposite the hinges at 40, and the doors have projections 42 which on opening engage slots 41 in the locking-shaft and prevent its rotation. The doors are held closed by catches 45.
